It's gonna be another KAZAM, isn't it?

Some users here have a hard time copying and paste, so let me help you out since you went to the trouble of providing us a source: https://ew.com/movies/2018/12/19/aladdin-first-look-ew-cover-story/

It went remarkably in depth without spoiling anything. Thank you kindly. [tips hat]

Your source, Piya Sinha-Roy of 'Entertainment Weekly', claims that British director, Guy Ritchie, knows that there is no foreseeable way to capture the same dramatic flare of Disney's 1992 animated classic, 'Aladdin', opting to make this live-action version more "self-aware" as to differentiate itself while still maintaining a vibrant visual depiction of fictional Arabian Agrabah.

Personally, I don't know what to say about this creative direction. I feel it's necessary, since what translates great in a fast-paced cartoon obviously does not mesh neatly with real-world physics, unless a painstaking process that made 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' is done. My main concern is that the film's message will not have much to say what already hasn't been said in the aforementioned take, losing its ambiguity by needing to make so many changes for the sake of the live-action adaption in order to make it possible.

Which is important, since this upcoming film is clearly based on "Aladdin" 92' and not the fabled tale from " One Thousand and One Nights".

I knew that Slick Willie was playing the genie, but for some reason I thought it would be a CGI genie and he'd just do the voice. So to see him decked out in his mid-90s-looking genie garb and ready to work is a bit of a shock.

I was taken aback at first too. Entertainment Weekly says Smith will be playing a very vain Genie, which is ironic given Smith's open personality. It sounds like he will be playing against himself while spiritually returning to his 'Fresh Prince' roots at the same time, going full circle for him. This should be amusing.

I guess we'll just have to see how it works out.

Guy Ritchie has never been a favorite of mine, and the mess he made of King Arthur gives me little confidence in his ability to do Aladdin justice. But fingers crossed.

I just realized something. Why not have a live monkey instead of it being cgi? Did Crystal retire or something?

reply

That's what I found most confusing. Between the monkey and tell enie, they felt that the monkey is the one that needed cg? Wtf?

The 'ew' in the link is quite an apt response to this.

I'm not going to pre judge the entire thing but they should have put way more effort into the genie's appearance to look more mystical & ethereal with quality makeup or CGI as opposed to simply putting Will Smith in what looks like a Halloween genie costume from Walmart

You'd think they'd be more mindful to avoid anything that reminds audiences of Shaquille O'Neal in Kazam.

Obviously I have more faith in Will Smith to make it work but still they're not doing him any favors with that costume design

Right?

reply

Putting it simply. He looks ridiculous.

Somebody said in a YouTube review that Smith looks like a gay band leader. I believe it. And this movie has disaster written all over it.
