Undeveloped character

Mandy Kaling is the writer of the movie. However, she didn’t develop her own character at all. Why didn’t they dig deep as to why she lives with her aunt and uncle? why did she only go to a community college if she is supposedly brilliant? Why doesn’t she have any friends? Why is she depressed/related to Katherine’s monologue on depression? What was the point of all these nuances in the movie if they didn’t explore it or if it didn’t lend itself in any way?
