Because since the 1990's we now know how aggressive female hyena's are and that they're the pack leaders. Oh, and they kill male lions all the time. Many even have a pseudo-penis (which the movie didn't include, thank goodness). Just throwing this out there.

shareThe three Hyenas are quite prominent in the original; Whoopi Goldberg as Shenzi, Cheech Marin as Banzai, and Jim Cummings as Ed. Ed never says a signal word but laughs all the time and communicates everything through those crazed laughs and looks.
They all were well cast and expertly acted in the original.
Shenzi is from the cartoon original. Diversity and feminism did have something to do with expanding the character but also as I mentioned the behavior of Hyena's which the first film didn't get ''right''. Girls rule in Hyena society.
