Main Character Is Too Perky

First of all, I look forward to watching the Hallmark Channel Christmas movies each year. This year has not been their best productions, in my opinion. I enjoyed the 2013/14 seasons better. With movies like "The Nine Lives of Christmas" and "Snow Bride". Both of the female leads characteristics were more grounded. By the way, where are Kimberly Sustad and Katrina Law this year? They are enjoyable and talented actresses and should have more lead roles.

So, I'm watching "My Christmas Love" right now and I gotta tell ya, I will be deleting my recording after I finish this. The main female lead, Meredith Hagner, is way beyond perkily annoying. I know that's what the script and director called for, but she needed to take it down a notch or four. It verged on the edge of airhead. She didn't listen to anyone's wishes. Just what she thought should be done, for instance, decorating the house. The sister was a little too brittle. The guys were the regular stock that Hallmark uses, but that's fine because it's nice to see the same people and know that they are getting work. Acting is not an easy profession to find work. OK, I'm done. Have a nice holiday season whatever your faith or philosophy is. And, here's hoping that the 2017 Christmas season 🌲will have better Hallmark movies.

Well, I like perky. She had a real Meg Ryan thing going on. One of the best offerings of the season.

I agree with rebekahrox. I love her Meg Ryan vibe! I think her perkiness if fun. Plus, she's meant to be a children's book author and the book's main character sounds like a very cutesy character. So it kind of makes sense that she would be quirky.

reply

Rebekahrox, we're so on the same wavelength! I said the same thing during the movie -- "she's like Meg Ryan!" Or maybe like Reese Witherspoon in her Legally Blonde role. Wife and I liked the movie, too.

First of all I agree with your overall view of this seasons Christmas movies. Very disappointing so far and like you I've deleted everything I've watched. There was nothing I found that warranted another viewing, as far as the lead character, I agree as well. If I were the male lead, I would have opted for the exgirlfriend Maggie. She was better looking too.

reply

I'm amazed at the naysayers. If you look at the reviews of her work in gift wrapped Christmas they were universally glowing.

I thought I was the only one who found her perkiness annoying lol. She reminded me of Bubbles from The PPG.

reply

Noooooo disagree I loved her energy! I just watched this last night and thought is was very cute

Hah, looks like we're fairly evenly divided on the perky issue!
Her Meg Ryan vibe is exactly what I find annoying about her! I feel like she's trying too hard to be the next Meg Ryan (and I do like Meg Ryan) - like she's doing an imitation of her. I saw another Hallmark movie she was in last year (I think it was "A Gift Wrapped Christmas") and I felt the same way.

I also found her character, Cynthia, in this movie to be annoying and self-absorbed. She seemed to make everything about her, like in the scene where Liam first talks to Maggie - The way Cynthia butted in so he would introduce her and the way she was making weird faces behind his back like she found it disgusting that he should be happy to see his old (girl)friend. Not cute.

Edited to add:
Oops - I didn't mean to reply directly to the last post. I was just trying to add my post to the thread. Sorry, I'm new to posting messages here!

No worries about being new to the message posting, we just have fun here. I must say this in response to your point (as others also made): these are characters we're seeing. If one is too perky, if one is too moody, etc., well, that is what those characters are. Right? Who says Humphrey Bogart was "too moody" and "smoked too much" in Casablanca? Or that Billy Bob Thornton was too "weird" in Sling Blade?

I'm not getting all annoyed about this -- I'm just wanting to point out that if the actors and actresses convince us about the genuineness of their characters, then they have succeeded. Wife and I enjoy the characters as they are portrayed, and then we talk about whether the characters were right or wrong or crazed or vulnerable or bitchy or jerky or whatever 😀

Just another way to enjoy Hallmark movies!

My wife has this on TV right now... good god, you are so correct OP.

Not only was her character too hyped up on caffeine but her lack of true emotion for love. She has what I call the Prince Charming syndrome for love. And again this was not one I will keep in my Christmas movies archive.

Thanks for agreeing. There have been a few people who have also agreed. There have been a few that enjoy the perkiness. I've just never been one who likes that type of personality very much. I did watch Meredith Hagner in 2015's "The 12 Gifts of Christmas". She and her character was much better in that. Not quite as perky and a bit more like a lower key Meg Ryan, which people on this thread have compared her to.

Have a fun and safe New Year's!

Glad you said something. I just finished watching this and her perkiness was beginning to give me a headache. Cute movie though.

reply

I agree. I'm about halfway through it and about to fast forward because of the perkiness. I'm happy by nature - I always smile at everyone I talk to and have a pleasant thing to say, but if I ever start bouncing around for every little thing that happens and giggling and creating horrific words like it's a "Christery" please dose me with a lot of Ritalin.

Also, you mentioned Kimberly Sustad and she was in Hearts of Christmas this year. She had a secondary role as the lead actor's sister.
