Welland's secret (spoilers)

So Adam reveals to Welland that he's had unnatural feelings towards Annie since she was a little girl?! Isn't Adam guilty of exactly the same thing? Is Welland actually related to Annie - I couldn't make out if he was an uncle or just a very close family friend due to working with her Dad.
