Reminds me more of Hex (2004).

BTVS is always gonna be the gold standard for this genre. This is a good series start tho. I hope they keep it alive for another season and then some

If by 'genre' you mean a story about a girl you'd expect to be the helpless victim learning to kick the asses of monsters, then it's really not a 'genre'. It's just Buffy.

I was definitely getting that vibe watching the first episode. And then Angel showed up at the end to clinch it.
