I wonder if it's wider than The Hateful Eight or Ben Hur

It is, according to:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_%28image%29

H8 and BH were 2.76:1, and there is no mention of any film going 3.6:1.

The closest is Abel Gance's Napoléon (1927) listed as 4:1, and that's down to three 35 mm 1.33:1 reels projected side by side: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyvision

If I have my geometry correct, VoT IMAX being 1.43:1 means VoT 3.6 would be showing less than half the 'full' frame.

But hey - as long as this has been thought-through, and theaters chosen are suitably shaped (more wide than deep essentially), and multiplex audience don't feel short-changed watching a 40 minute film - then why not I guess ..

The Variety exclusive: https://t.co/X88e5gWSzd, i.e.
http://variety.com/2016/film/in-contention/terrence-malick-ultra-wide-voyage-of-time-re-release-1201933834/

Fascinating reading above, and dying to see however many versions when/if offered over here, but ..

Giving 4 days notice for the release of a film that took 'several decades' to make is, to put it politely, a bit curious.

And 2 things about the removal of Pitt's VO; 1) A watershed moment* for Malick, whichever way you look at it, and 2) someone should let AMC know, who still list him as 'cast':
https://www.amctheatres.com/movies/voyage-of-time-ultra-widescreen-3-6

And, technically, this not being in the IMAX format, what with no VO and a completely different aspect ratio .. does this mean a separate (3rd) IMDB board for Voyage of Time, i.e. the 'Ultra Widescreen 3.6' version? In-any-case, I can't imagine at least some changes to the edit being needed after these changes ..

*Where does this leave the Blanchett 90 minute version I wonder?

Tomorrow in NYC and Philly (KoP). And an article in Screencrush regarding this ultrawide VoT drops in passing that there was a recent showing of TToL at BAM that featured a live orchestra! How'd that run under the radar?

Saw it last night, it was fantastic. No narrator was no problem, the widescreen was awesome. Well worth it, although I think tonite is the last night in regular IMAX theaters because Star Wars comes out.

If you have any interest and it's playing near you, go see it.

I saw the "Ultra-Widescreen" edition on Sunday night in a moderately seated screening. This edit, to me, felt like a live-action version of "Fantasia", from the mix of visual and classical to the wonderment that nature can still provoke from an audience. The whole theater seemed to really enjoy it, too.
