I thought I wanted this for the longest time but...

It's not as good as the two part version!

1. The house of blue leaves fight sequence in color seems unfinished because a lot of the blood is clearly water, it was meant to be black and white. There are a few added shots that are great, but it's not worth it. The shot of Sophie getting her arm chopped off is cool too, but still not worth trading film versions.

2. The fantastic intro and title card to vol. 2 is dropped all together. This 4th wall breaking monologue is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It's noir, clever, funny and is yet another love letter to classic cinema with the line 'what the movie advertisements referred to as 'a roaring rampage of revenge'". It's just sorely missed.

3. The shift from part one and two is not smooth. The cliffhanger reveal is not as powerful when you cut to another scene as oppose to the ending credits. Cutting from Bill at the hospital in japan to then visiting Bud in Texas is also very jarring. The reveals of things like Bills face, Beatrix's name etc also loose their impact.

4. The split between films sort of serves as an intermission if you want to watch them back to back and is perfect for casual viewers to watch over two days. With no breaks this film is not easy to watch for 4 straight hours, and it's my favorite Tarantino flick.

When I first heard about this version I wanted it to replace the individual films so bad. I don't dismiss long movies simply for being long. I love a good 3+ hour movie, Hateful 8 Roadshow was excellent and the 4 hour extended cut of return of the king is one of my favorite films, but this story works better in two distinct parts.

If you are a hardcore QT fan, I definitely recommend watching it at least once to see a early rough cut of the movie, as this was the original premiere version at cannes. If you are a more casual QT fan, you aren't missing much and have seen the better version.

I can see that all making sense but how did you see it!? I'd still like to check it out.

I read somewhere the anime sequence from Part 1 is longer as well

reply

I've come to realize that it is never coming out. 13 years? This is ridiculous.

I just downloaded the fan edit from the torrents. It's supposed to be pretty accurate. Of course, I have no way of knowing if it is.

I'll find a blurb to read every few years about this for s's & g's, but i gave up on ever actually (trying to) see this.

Don't you know where to download it? I might be able to help.

When Quentin announced this, I hoped that he would insert footage that was cut from the original movies (B's actual beating in the church, etc.). When I found out that it was simply the two released films spliced together, I lost interest. I bought two versions of Volume 1 (US & JAPAN).

reply

Yeah, buying both versions gives you all the footage anyway. I still haven't watched this fan edit, but it's supposedly a very good job. I'm concerned about the soundtrack edit though.

What are the differences between the two releases?

I never understood people considering this the best Tarantino movie...

I understand people saying they consider Jackie Brown to be his best movie. What they're actually saying is, "I don't really like Tarantino movies very much."

It was originally intended to be in color and changed to black and white to avoid an NC-17 rating. I just watched the scene in color and didn't notice any "water." Possibly in some long-distance shots simply to save special effects costs, but if so, it must not be that noticeable.

EDIT: I think I know what you're talking about. Some Crazy 88s fall into a pool of water during the fight, so after that their clothes and hair are soaking wet. When Beatrix kills them, they flail around and water goes flying everywhere. It's obvious in color, but in black and white it looked the same as the blood effects.

For me, it's really simple. Tarantino originally conceived it as one single movie and he shot almost all of it as if he was making one single movie. It was not his decision to split it into two. That was the executive producer's decision purely for marketing purposes, and Tarantino conceded and compromised and made changes and additions to make it work as parts 1 and 2. That's fine, it works either way. But one movie was the original concept and by default it is the "correct" concept for lack of a better term. Anyone is free to prefer the executive producer's split up version, have at it. Not like either version is going to make the other one go away.

That's what I was worried about. Vol 1 has one of the best endings ever and that includes end credits. It would be a real shame to lose it.
