From dealine (a site which has been doing everything to protect this movie): "Should Little Mermaid break even, it would be a rare feat for a tentpole to do so on the back of its domestic box office. Typically a tentpole sees 60% of its global box office total (or more) coming from overseas. Typically Disney titles seeing 50/50 splits between domestic and international box office are movies such as 2018’s Christopher Robin and 2016’s Pete’s Dragon." This is a big 'IF' it break even... Yeah, international numbers don't matter... https://deadline.com/2023/05/little-mermaid-box-office-profit-loss-halle-bailey-1235383099/
It's already understood in the industry that this will be a money-loser. It's gonna need great legs domestically just to keep the losses under $100 million.
Looks like it is getting some international legs. Perhaps it is the attention all the haters are giving it? Nothing like a boomerang to the face is there.
It has a budget of 250 millions
+some 100-150 were spent on promotion
International movie theaters usually give back on American studio around 50%. And only 1/3 from, China. So out of those 140 millions only around 70 millions will count.
70 + 186 = 256. This is how much movie made as as this moment. With some 400 millions spend on it overall.
Its not doing good numbers.
Aladdin made $355 millions at Domestic Box Office + $691 at International Box Office.
Beauty and the Beast made 504 at Domestic Box Office + $764 at International Box Office
By comparison to other Disney live-action movies - its tanking.
Did you see that I merely posted the current earnings? You're preaching to the choir. I thought everyone knew it takes 2-3 times productions costs to earn a profit.
What do you expect good numbers to be during the first two weeks of release?
Are you claiming that Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast made those figures in their first two weeks of wide release?
It’s called "legs". Movies usually get the biggest money out of first 2 weeks. Specially in the international box-office. Many cities there just show movie for 2 weeks then get it out of the schedule. To make space for new releases. Specially smaller cities or those theaters who dont have 5 screens.
Little Mermaid fell 58% in second week. Thats big.
Little Mermaid earned $95 millions on first week-end. $40 millions on second. Fell for -58%
Aladdin earned $91 millions on first week-end. $42 millions on second. Fell for -53%
Beauty and the Beast $174 millions on first week-end. $90 millions on second. Fell for -48%
Easily? It's still at least $240 million short of break even, and I don't see it doing much more business with Spider-Man in theaters, and more blockbusters on the horizon.
