Redditors in shambles. Calling all of Asia 'racist' for not watching The Little Mermaid.

With the recent The Little Mermaid release, a lot of off topics were brough to the table. The topics of race, blackwashing, racism, etc. are not topics to be dismissed so quickly and with ease. However, a quick reminder to newcomers and why not old-timers, r/boxoffice is about numbers to put it simply.

In the past week we've seen many takes on why and how, most of which includes the topics above. And this is fine... if you can bring a correlation with data and analysis. The problem become even more prominent in the past 24 hours, with Little Mermaid international opening weekend numbers and ratings in overseas markets. Users were quick to jump the gun and the accusations and pseudo analysis starts flying.

Some of you deemed entire continents, countries, ethnics racist. And you can do that. But you will have to bear the consequences of your own actions. I know for some the silver lining doesn't exists, so we are either with them or against them. Folks think we are siding with either of the groups - the accusers or the accused. Matter of fact, we care about the analysis of the situation. If you bring such topics to the conversation, you better do an analysis correlated to box office. Generalization based on your opinionated subjective view should be at least civil in some manner with again, connection to the sub itself. Shouting out racism, racist, etc. just because you feel it, or you think it's the moral think to do, to expose in your own believe such traits, is your right... but will be seen as off topic here. We like users here to bring even if little, to the sub with actual on topic discussions. Ethnics could be a good conversation here, if you do it right. Trades have been doing it long time, with breakdown of target demos and analyzing ratings based on that.

I again couldn't stress enough the importance of bearing the consequences of your own actions. If your post/comment was removed/locked, this isn't a matter of personal feelings. It's just an off topic that don't bring nothing to the conversations, which r/boxoffice is striving for. There are plenty of communities you can comment the current situation like r/movies, r/disney, etc.

This is also a reminder that this case isn't unique to The Little Mermaid. It's just that the movie release prominently now dominates those topics. Racial slurs, insults, trolling are not welcomed here. You can see rule #4.

https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/13us7tq/a_quick_reminder_what_rboxoffice_is_about/

r/boxoffice is having to clamp down on it.

Got to love the meltdown. When your latest Disney blackwash project flops you immediately call entire continents racist (continents filled with other 'people of color').

Reminds me of that time Elizabeth Bank's film (an action flick marketed to women) flopped and she blamed men. Also that time that gay rom-com flopped and the director called everyone homophobic.

It seems some people think you have to go see these movies in cinemas or else you're racist/homophobic/sexist. They consider it imperative you spend your money and use your free time to watch this stuff to line the pockets of huge corporations.

Picture this, you're a 35 year old man, a liberal who is pro-diversity... are you even interested in seeing The Little Mermaid? A film which is primarily for young girls?

You've heard 'em boys. Go see this or you're racist!

Look at it preaching to its reactionary boi choir up here. How bold and oh-so-awaken, boi! Shambles? Hmm, you mean like the entire ultra kewl anti-woke (totally not racist) reich pill brigade has been since the announcement of Ariel’s actress was made? And especially after the first trailer for it dropped? Sounds about ALTright.

But aww, how madly obsessed you are with something you hate/see beneath you. Well duh, that’s how it is with you projecting benny shapiros of the world who’ve been talking about this film (all things WOKEE BOOGEYWOMAN DISNEY — and anything that inconveniences yer Broflake selves) no less than any of your “they call me racist for no reason waaa waaa” wokester enemies who actually *gasps* liked-loved this film.

Lol… “they call you racist and sexist if you don’t like it” says the broken record projecting reich wing broflakes who’ve been having meltdowns over this movie for a year for all the REICH reasons. “It looks, it is BAD and that’s the only reason we, the true majority who’ve been REASONABLY ranting loudly and excessively about this film, don’t like it!”… Yes, this again as expected. Twisting things around so they fit your very obvious agenda? Wow, first time the super sane and totally non-biased reactionary manbabies have done this when it comes to big FoRCED DiVERSiTy and WoKE AgENda films (those especially coming from the biggest fascist-hated studio in Hollywood). So yea, projecting as you reactionary chuds do best you are, what else is new up in this broflake safe space.

Go WoKe GO… you hear that fascist-hated Hollywood? Sure the big bad Mouse is the #1 enemy of the propagandist reich, but if it hasn’t been made clear enough: thee modern film industry as a whole is seen as WoKe by super duper grown big boys on the reich. Yet, somehow you’re still making lots of money overall and not dying off, Hollywood? WOkE! Hell, many on the reich have made careers crying nonstop about your woke boogeywoman ways, so what would these FaIr and BalanCed big boi righties do without you totally not offending them? Oh, they’d just be ranting about everything else they don’t like in the world and scream [insert reich wing buzzwords here]. Now this film was obviously THE ONE the reich wanted to fail more than any other in history (u know why), although you know if it had been a massive hit worldwide… the reich pill bois would still find a way to twist things around as they’ve done with other hugely successful films from Disney in particular. DiSnEy pAiD foR THe SeAtS… jUst CUz It MaDe a BiLlIon DoESnT MeAn It WasnT a FaIlUre. Oh yeah you’re certainly not projecting, black Little Mermaid-haunted broflake.

While no doubt this movie will always live rent free in the chuds’ heads (they’ll never stop bringing it up, ‘specially whenever they make their tired gO WOkE Go bs points), soon it’s on to their next wokee target from a studio and industry that, well of course, lives rent free in their heads. Zzz

You actually thought posting this gibberish was productive?

That post wasn't as big the first time I skipped it. He came back and added more. LMAO.

He seems upset.

What a pile of shite!

holy shit, if a post could represent the physical embodiment of a lefty douchebag, this would be it!🤣🤡😅

"BroFlakes" LOL, I love it!

What most of these RightWokers forget is that the original Disney cartoon wasn't even faithful to HC Anderson's original story.

Forgot to take your meds again, troll boy?🍆

Haven't seen this troll is a while. DracTarashV2 is a deranged woke marxist. Probably on drugs too.

‘We need to be feel represented in movies, otherwise we don’t go see it”
‘So we made this movie that represents 5% of population, why is no one seeing it???”

Oh, well …

reply

That's what happened with that gay rom-com. They made a romantic comedy for gay dudes, a small percentage of people, then when it flopped the director blamed homophobia and outright implied a large percentage of Americans are homophobic.

It's marketing 101. Some films are for children, some are geared more towards adult women, others to teenage boys. You make a film for a niche audience then cry foul when it flops?

People are not required to pay their hard earned money to see a film not intended for them as a show of support for the LGBT community. It's absolutely ridiculous the way they get on. They're trying to shame and brand people as evil for not watching films that don't appeal to them.

The Little Mermaid is a film primarily for young girls...they also made a big hoopla about her now being a black princess. The demographics show that African Americans did indeed support this movie... the problem is they only make up 13% of the US population, with people of African descent making up even smaller percentages in Europe and Asia.

Step 1; Make a movie for young girls, especially black ones.
Step 2; It does well with your target demo. Congrats. It does poorly with others and ultimately flops.
Step 3; Call everyone racist for not flocking out to see a movie for little girls.

Not to mention they're insulting their biggest customer base: white, middle-class, straight people with families and money to spend (or at least we used to). We went for 34 years with a white, red-haired Ariel. Then they go and insult their biggest customer base by radically changing Ariel, accusing anyone who doesn't like it that they're a bigot, rewriting the story with an extreme distaste for romance, emotion, or a good story, and then whining their asses off when almost everyone, even the foreign movie market says it stinks.

It just goes to show how out-of-touch Hollywood is with the rest of America and the world. They really love shooting themselves in the foot over and over again.

reply

It is a bit early to be using the words "ultimately flops". Not even in wide release for two weeks yet.

reply

It's a nasty thing these people are doing.

They seem to view movies as activism. They actually consider their failures to be the results of societal racism, sexism, homophobia etc, etc. It's very bizarre behaviour.

It's entertainment at the end of the day and people not going to the cinema to watch The Little Mermaid doesn't mean they're racist.

reply

They learned, with the all-women Ghostbusters, that they can just insult the audience and not worry about the quality of the movie itself.

reply

That's not the best way to lure people back to cinemas, I think...

reply

That's what I've been thinking. What's exactly their end game?

Do they think they can effectively gaslight a large chunk of the population into believing it's their moral duty to go watch films like The Little Mermaid to 'own the racists'? To prove they are a true supporter of diversity?

It doesn't seem to be working and creates a real controversy around the film. The whole reaction to this films boxoffice performance is hysterical. We have some people outright denying it's flopping even though the figures are out and it's simple mathematics and we have people slamming entire nationalities, races, countries and continents. Imagine calling over one third of the worlds population racist all because a Disney movie isn't making money.

reply

I'm beginning to think they consider the losses necessary costs to shut out anyone who refuses to go along with "the new normal" (to put it as briefly as possible).

reply

Why do you feel that this film has you questioning your sanity, memories, or perception of reality? Are you trying to play some sort of sympathy card on this forum?

The film is not controversial. The people objecting to the mermaid skin color are as are those who paint entire groups of people as racist.

reply

HelloSidney...you seem to be causing a lot of "meltdowns" here by simply being a voice of reason. You knock it out of the park every time and it seems to drive the lunatics around bere batty.

reply

No, she is walking into a gas-lamp of her own making on the way to her own meltdown.

reply

How can Asian people be racist? They're not even white.

reply

Go to South Korea or Japan and experience it for yourself. The vast majority are nice, some are not. Just like in every other country in the world.

reply

Sarc.

reply

Sarcasm is dead on this forum and my irony meter is broken. :)

reply

Deeply unfortunate that as western culture has spread globally, it has brought with it the poison that is racism.

Not surprising though, considering western culture is founded in racism. Once western culture starts to have an influence, there's no way to stop racism from following.

reply

Deeply unfortunate you are so clueless and brainwashed.

reply

Will assume you are joking.

reply

Not at all. It only seems that way because you've been living in a right wing bubble, perhaps.

You need to expose yourself to modern thinking on these issues. I suggest reading thinkers like Robin DiAngelo, Cornel West, Ibram X. Kennedy...

Western societies historically have been very toxic.

reply

And Asian ones haven't?

reply

Liberals fell off a LONG time ago. Their entire party and current mindset has become a joke to the rest of the world. The sad thing is that they are too brainwashed to see what fools they have become.

reply

Why would Asians be interested in a 19th century Danish fairy tale?

reply

You see the entire world must CONSUME the latest Disney product in a global effort to combat racism, sexism & homophobia.

Disney are our saviours, they're the goodies. Blessings be upon them. Spend your money on their products or you are literally evil.

Is Asia not interested in 'owning the racists' by helping a black fish-princess film make billions?

reply

You could ask them yourself. You ever watch the 1975 version of The Little Mermaid? It is much more true to the 1837 story including the nudity, pain and suffering, plot to murder the prince and the tragic ending. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Christian_Andersen%27s_The_Little_Mermaid_(1975_film)

There is also Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid, a 26 episode TV series. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saban%27s_Adventures_of_the_Little_Mermaid

Your post reminded me of The Little Mermaid show I watched on TV whenever it was playing when I was a child. I'm pretty sure this is it, but don't know if this followed the original Andersen story, though. I remember being very moved by it when I was a child.

The Disney cartoon Little Mermaid was well beyond my time but I know it was very popular and I had boys so they never saw it on DVD.
