So, 'Merica doesn't care that Ariel is part fish. They care that she's black?

Absolutely amazing. She's not real, she lives in water, is part fish, and talks to crabs and shrimp. Yet all they see is her being black, which is the ONLY realistic thing about her. Just goes to show you the (low) mentality and how strong racism is in 'Merica.

It's 2022, and black people can't even get a fair shake on things as insignificant as TV/movies. They stand no chance with anything else.

Those same people probably don't care about how for decades, minorites were played by white males. Was that okay? And now they're mad cause the roles they think they own are not all white. Even fantasy roles that aren't real?

Hypocrisy on a level "that's never seen before". (I stole that from #45 since those types are used to hearing that statement).

I wouldn't have liked it if they cast a white girl with short blonde hair either. That make me a short-hair'ist?

They'll be blind-sided when the REAL woke message turns out to be that she wants out of the sea because of it being so polluted

You must be incredibly clueless to not understand why fans have an issue with the absolutely unnecessary and pointless race swapping.

If you’re going to do a live adaptation of an animated film, then adapt it accurately. Don’t make a major, senseless change that only appeals to a small portion of the potential audience.

reply

Since when does an accurate adaptation of a mermaid means she's white.

reply

I think they mean an accurate adaptation of the "animated film". In fact, since that's what they *said* I'm pretty *certain* that's what they meant. 🤷‍♂️

Of course mermaids can be Black. Of course it doesn't matter what skin colour a fictional mermaid is. But I think a lot of people were expecting these live-action adaptations to be as true to the original *animated films* as possible. If this was a separate studio and it was adapting Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid, and NOT Disney's 1989 animated version of The Little Mermaid, you'd have a point.

My apologies that my reliance on facts and logic turns out to serve a 'racist' narrative.

reply

I frankly don't care. I refuse to watch these live action remakes of animated Disney movies. Also, aren't all mermaids part fish?

reply

I don’t see how mermaids being fictional is relevant to the discussion. The original Little Mermaid is white, and Disney’s Ariel is white. This is a remake of the latter, so people expect this version to be white too, among other things that they expect to be as faithful as possible.

Hollywood has always had a race problem, and people complained back then too. At least back then they did it out of convenience, and the actors bothered to wear make-up to look like the characters they played. Instead of learning from their mistakes and using the resources they didn’t have back then, Hollywood just swung the pendulum the other way. If whitewashing is bad - and it is - so are other forms of color washing. But people are mocked and ostracized for pointing that out, which goes to show you who the real privileged people are. You don’t fix the problem by becoming a hypocrite.

There’s plenty of non-white fantasy stories to adapt, and people are willing to watch those stories as evidenced by the countless successful movies and shows with non-white leads, so it can be done. You can either continue playing coy, or admit that Hollywood is smugly pushing and agenda, and will continue to push it until they’ve run out of IPs and money.

With all due respect, if you've got a problem with this part "she lives in water, is part fish, and talks to crabs and shrimp," perhaps a film called The Little Mermaid, isn't for you.

And minority roles being played by white males was NEVER okay, but most of the people complaining now weren't born when films like The Conqueror and Breakfast at Tiffany's was being made. But, yes, in hindight, they were VERY WRONG. Not much we can do about them now though, unless you have a time machine TylerAArse. Do you?

She's whiter than Henry Tarrio, Jr., so I don't know what all the fuss is about.
