I remember watching the REAL STORY

about this girl's horrific nightmare. It was on ID Channel on one of their television shows (I forgot the name of the television show) ID Channel has so many shows that deal w/TRUE CRIMES. I'm sure if you google ID Channel and the young woman's name you will definitely find the show. It was so sad I was crying and horrified at what these people did - the show did reenactments just to show what horrible things they did to her and how they treated her like she was a piece of trash. I really want to see the Lifetime movie, and I hope they respect it and don't make it "campy" b/c its a TRUE STORY - not "based on events or inspired by events"; it was REAL LIFE as you can get. God Bless that whole family who went thru hell. I am glad they will be doing a "special" right after the movie is over b/c I want to know what happened afterwards to that evil couple. The ID t.v. show didn't really go into the "after" part.

God. I just set my DVR for it, and they're showing the real story after. :(

reply

God. That's just incredible.

I read up about the real event...I think this is going to be really difficult to watch. 10 minutes in and already I'm already horrified.

I remember this story, and I was looking forward to the TV movie. It's hard to horrify me, but I don't think I can continue watching this because it's so horrific. In 1977 I was 18, so this happened during my generation. I think that's part of what horrifies me. I think of all the crazy things we did back then, and this evil thing was happening across the country.

I saw the same ID special a few months ago. It's awful. I also a few other documentaries about this and similar cases. I've also seen and read a few reports about the wife. I really believe she was a victim herself. She was under his control similar to a cult member. One thing I read about her suggested she was co dependent. She had to have someone in charge of her to survive in the world. Abusive or not. Maybe she felt she deserved a sick man like her husband. But it's no excuse for what took part in. I'm glad this seen through her eyes.

Janice changed her name and works as a Therapist in Paradise, California.

They had at least one other victim who lived in Chico, that it's believed they killed, her body was never found.

reply

I saw this at the end of the movie. Were they charged with the death of the other woman? It's sad the family didn't get to give her a proper burial.

reply

She goes by Janice Lashley now, and does work in Paradise.

I know Janice admitted to the police about the murder of Maric Elizabeth Spannhake, but I don't know if he was charged.

reply

Typo- that should be Marie

Wow. Is this her? She's in social work now? https://www.healthgrades.com/provider/janice-lashley-23f8c

reply

I think this may be her. The blonde on the far right. Even says she went to Red Bluff High.

She is using the name Janice Kahn now. One of her daughters is named Christy Lashley. They are on Facebook.

Only in America can a woman admit to being an accessory to a murder and to kidnapping and torture, and instead spending the rest of her life in jail, get a job as a therapist. Only in America.

reply

Gotcha. And I wanna see your post if (Oh God, please no....) Hilary gets elected. Only in bleeding heart, socialist becoming US of A.

Yeah, sure, because nobody gets away with crimes in any other countries. That only happens in America. Everywhere else, all criminals are always punished for their actions. 

Yes, perhaps she'd be in prison for life in another country, but no country is perfect when it comes to punishing criminals for their crimes.

reply

That's absolutely terrifying. I go to Paradise quite often and drive by her office building all the time, while I am there. I had no idea.

reply

I only recorded the movie. I didn't know there was a program about it called "The Real Girl In The Box". I'm interested in seeing it, even though it will probably be more difficult to watch than the Lifetime movie.

Does anyone know where I can see the actual documentary?

reply

On the ID(Investigation Discovery) cable channel, it was on the program, 'Wicked Attraction', the episode was called, 'Kidnapped'. Season 01, ep 08, I believe.
