I don't know how long ago it was read the novel, or if you ever read it, because that's not what it was about at all. There was a secret nurderous past, but the focus of the book was not that. It was about Mary Catherihe's fear of losing her sister. Which is what the murders were about too. It was a suspenseful novel, but it was a character study more than a suspense novel, and it wasn't horror in any way, shape, or form.
As far as "imagining things" - no. As far as "things appearing at their door" - no. Please explain where you got this stuff. It isn't in the novel.
