Script seems to be a problem

The way they interpret the effects of opium seems quite dubious. Back in those days probably the author had never seen it used, much less used it. I think today there is a much better understanding of how people act under its influence.

Unfortunately that's at the crux of most of the mystery.

Otherwise it has some interesting characters and story twists.
