Flawed 5%/25% stat

The 5% / 25% meme is problematic and works like the unemployment number manipulating in the US. The reason we're 25%, is because there's a massive amount of countries, namely the middle east, asia, africa and south america even, that just flat out KILL as punishment instead of incarceration. So in essence, you're berating the US for actually keeping criminals alive instead of flat out killing them.

Not even the most trigger happy countries in the world, Iran and China, execute enough people annually to have any noticeable impact on incarceration.

So you are wrong.

they don't need to. Swift capital punishment is a deterrent. Also most of these countries in the world don't report their crime. The US and some of Europe are the only ones that play by the rules In doing so

I'm not trying to start anything but just curious, do you have any factual statistics of that? I'd personally love to see some good hard facts on what actual incarceration/death penalty rates between countries are.

reply

How many crimes are committed in 3rd world countries and never charged or sentenced?

The movie addresses prison population but not a peep as to how much crime is committed in other countries that is never reported or prosecuted because it is a way of life.

Middle East is a transcontinental region of many countries.
Asia, Africa and South-America are all continents consisting of many countries.

Also, several States in the US have the death penalty, so they do kill them.

it's even more problematic when those stats are given without even mentioning the crime rates. the real problem is that we have an enormous segment of the population that thinks it's perfectly fine to commit crimes. a lot of these people get convicted and sent to jail. the crime rates in the rest of the western world don't come anywhere near the crime rates in the USA and the movie didn't mention the crime rates even once. for all we know, american crime rates are so high that our incarceration rates actually are low relative to all the crime that gets committed here (i don't know if that's true but throwing out raw prison numbers in a vacuum with no mention of crime rates is a ridiculously biased and weak attempt at trying to show evidence of something).

reply

I'm sorry this is backwards. Our incarceration is a function of how much we choose to criminalize, and how serious we set the penalties for those things at. Small amount of crack cocaine gets 20 year sentence. This is not a function of Americans committing more crimes.
