Lol sorry, but the particular common comeback you're using here fails in Light of this documentary. People on the left and right are blamed in this film : think of bill Clinton and the incarceration laws he passed. Did you even watch the film? Yes, there is liberal bias especially at the end but not so much bias as to the history presented

Um... no. The movie nowhere makes the claims you pretend are there. In fact, there is a specific segment where a black leader is asked about violence and she admits violence feels or seems like an answer because of the pain years of oppression has caused . Nice try

reply

It also blames black people for voting for those laws as well. They didn't say everyone was innocent, nor did they make it seem like that. But they did say punishments were harsh.

We all know there is a problem and everyone needs to know that, so passing blame on anyone's side won't help. But you are unlikely to fix a problem if you cannot see it. I think that was more of the aim of the film, to show a problem we all know about in a new light.

Ignore these trolls. I'd bet anything that nay-sayers like Oz haven't even seen the film--they've just read or heard about it, no doubt in some conservative forum or another. If you're the sort of person who doesn't believe racism exists (or at the very least is "exaggerated by the liberal media"), you're certainly not gonna sit through a feature documentary about racism anyway. But you'll probably go on threads like this to pretend you have, and to dismiss basic claims of governmental/societal racism.

Actually I did watch the documentary. And I have several problems with it.
First off the documentary shows Assata Shakur and Angela Davis as political prisoners and that their arrests were racially motivated. It failed to mention that assata Shakur was a cop killer who fled to Cuba. And failed to leave all the facts about Angela Davis.
Also the Trayvon Martin case. Well I will agree that the loss of human life is tragic especially someone Young. however, a first-year criminal justice student could have got George Zimmerman to walk without the help of the stand-your-ground law. The media sensationalized this case so bad, that the public had already convicted Zimmerman before the facts came out. Between the edited 911 call the news used as well as Zimmerman's injuries being covered up till the end.

Then we have the cocaine vs. Crack laws. Again this is a load of garbage. These are federal laws not state laws. Police officers do not enforce federal laws they enforce local laws and local laws are different than federal laws. Federal law enforcement officials aren't going around arresting people for having one gram of cocaine or a rock. They focus more on drug kingpins. Anyways even if that were the case that would hurt people living in the suburbs more. Police officers don't enforce Petty drug offenses in high-crime areas because they don't have the time or the manpower to do it. In the suburbs which has much less crime police officers are more prone to make those arrests. So based on that offer demographics that would be affecting white people more. Even in the cases or people are arrested for petty drug offenses there is usually an "and" involved. Meaning he had drugs on them and we found a gun on them. Or he had drugs on him "and" he had warrants.

Hands up don't shoot was a complete lie.

There's always more to the story and they're always facts left out.

Had to laugh when the movie laid out the foundation that the whole purpose of electing President Nixon was to put blacks in prison. It amazes me that people can be so gullible and easily manipulated to believe this type of trash.

reply

Thanks -- voice of reason. I just saw the film and was thinking about entering the fray here. But you are right: the film speaks for itself. The trolls do not cite anything specific.

this is what got trump elected?? Or was it that Hilary Clinton is just a horrible candidate?

This movie is nothing but a propaganda movie by the liberal left. It is designed to divide and anger in order to control the sheep and get votes for the Democrats. The scene where Donald Trump is speaking while the movie shows abuse of black people toward the end was enough for me. This is indeed why Donald Trump was elected. The people have had enough of the dishonesty of the left and those who buy into this garbage need to learn to think for themselves. Manipulative and dishonest garbage.

reply

Donald Trump was elected primarily because 62 million people in the US are ignorant fools and voted for him

reply

@Metro

It's ignorant idiots like you who actually believe Con Don's bull**** that voted for him. The majority of into in this doc is REAL history. Do the damn research and stop dismissing EVERYTHING you don't agree with as "liberal." That just makes you sounds like an idiot who can't think for themselves unless the right wing tells you what the hell to think. Andy's idiots like you who don't want to listen to anything a non-white male has to say. trumpf is unqualified for president and only got elected because he was already a famous media whore. The fact that you actually believe this narcissistic idiot can run the country when he has ZERO experience ust speaks to how little fools like you know how a country is actually run. And, no this film came out after the election, so it didn't have jack to do with it.

@activista

Actually the documentary, "13th", was released a month before the election. It was introduced at the NY Film Festival on Sep 30th before its nationwide launch (Netflix) on Oct 7th, including a limited release in theaters.

What's more, you didn't even refute anyone. Instead you used the 'old classic' ad hominem attack. Good for You!😃

reply

There's no way that you can take a movie seriously that has audio of Trump talking about beating up people (both white and black) who illegally show up at his events with the intent on illegally disrupting them while video from the 1960s is rolling of completely innocent whites being beaten, fire hosed, lynched, etc. Yes, it is garbage like this that helped get Trump get elected because people are so fed up with this tripe coming from the left.

reply

What did he mean by the "good old days" then? getting protersters out in stretches?

He's a Kim Jong Un wannabe.

reply

"The majority of info in this doc is REAL history."

I'm glad you agree that some of the info is fake history and BS.

The documentary at one point argues that black imprisonment is a continuation of slavery. Right, poor unfortunate blacks, locked up for killing people or for getting rich by dealing poisons like crack cocaine and meth. It's so unfair. They should all be released,ideally some of them can be housed next door to you and you can discuss with them how to make the world a better place. If you live long enough.

mainstream Hollywood has been peddling soft propaganda pretty much from its inception. the message is that USA (America - *beep* yeah!) is a land of milk n honey where everyone has a nice big house, a job, a big new car, sometime middle-class angst (but don't worry it will come good in the end) and of course a gun to (heroically) defend their family. Goebbels was deeply jealous of Hollywood's ability to entertain and get the message across. the message can be very positive (but still milk n honey) for supported sections of the community eg gay lesbian folks and indeed for black folks. the senior army guy (there's a wise army general in lots of hollywood movies, or, the wise senator/boss/whatever is usually black. (sometimes a helen mirren type white woman but never gay. This documentary is unashamedly polemic and aimed at starting conversation. It succeeds and i think its main premis is accurate. Michael Moore and others point out that if you have been to jail you dont get to vote - in some states even when you come out. 1 in 3 black male kids will go to jail at some point. work it out for yourselves.
