They were going to crash before reaching Japan even without the storm. The MD80 max range was only about 1700 miles while the MD90 is about 2400 miles. They were going to be 2 hours short on fuel and from 1,000 to 2,000 miles short on the range of that “6 hour” flight.

Perhaps we can consider that normally the MD80/90 takes 150-170 passengers but on this flight there were only like a dozen (?) passengers onboard. So a lot less weight and possible extra range, if they had the normal amount of fuel. Not sure if it would be enough for another 1,500 miles though.
