The man should've been fired plain and simple. I think his offensive coordinator/assistant head coach would've made for a much, much better head coach.
Coach Stephens was a nearsighted hypocritical buffoon for the entire series. His lamenting at his players as "thugs and rednecks" when he himself was doing equally if not worse things soon before and during the last game was atrocious.
Sports (especially football) is a results driven environment. Owners, AD's, players and Fans are willing to put up with almost anything if you win. And since he has won so much, he clearly isn't a buffoon. So there isn't a chance in Hell that they were going to fire him after his team did the exact thing he was trying to prevent from happening.
Honestly, I can understand why people who aren't connected or around the sports world would feel outrage at Buddy, however this isn't something new. He may been a bit over the top, getting extra excited and enthusiastic for the cameras, but his actions (besides having a physical altercation) aren't that far off from what most coaches do.
Most coaches that tend to have a lot of success are egomaniacs, its just the nature of the beast. Doesn't excuse it or make it right but it does show why he acted the way he did. I thought it was impressive how he apologized to the team. With someone who has as big of an ego as he does, that took a lot.
