Absence

First of all I loved the show. I'm not American and there was one thing that stood out to me as weird and I would like to know more. Brittany Wagner and other people kept talking about not being absent from class as something that was essential to graduation. I get that it's bad to miss class because you miss out on an opportunity to learn, but they actually counted absences.

Usually a university couldn't care less if you obtained your knowledge from classes, books or somewhere else as long as you pass the examination. I'm pretty sure that's the case at American universities too. So is this a community college thing? An EMCC thing? Was it something that only applied to the football players?

Yeah, basically a combination of community college/athlete thing. Those players are unable to go to a larger school due to poor academics. They go to a place like 'last chance u' to artifically improve their academic record, just to play football. The teams EMCC play are in the same boat.

Depends on the classes or university programs. Some profs take attendance for lower level classes just to get some statistic on class participation, and sometimes those are weighted to part of your grade. It's mostly to get you into good habits as students adjust from high school to college.

When it comes to these athletes, most of them didn't have the support they should have and have been excused from following the rules simply because of their talent. They need to be babysat because they never developed the self-discipline to do it themselves. What none of them seem to realize, this is the last stop, and if they fail, nobody will care. They're a few bad grades or an unfortunate injury away from working construction.
