Aren't the Academy Awards actually IRRELEVENT?

Aren't they just a bunch of movie people patting each other on the back, voting for their 'friends or fellow brown nosers, or downright being 'bought' for their votes?

You just have to look at the list of nominees throughout the years, the winners and losers, and those that have been blatantly left unacknowledged.

(For example, Nicole Kidman winning best supporting actress for a five minute stint in The Hours, where her prosthetic nose actually upstaged her 'performance'. Ridiculous!)

Yes, I know sometimes ...once in a while...they get it right, more or less, but isn't it all just about nepotism and $$$$ and not really about rewarding true talent?

Does anyone actually take them seriously?

i do

So you really think the people getting the awards are the best in their field for that year? Seriously?

It's a fun event to watch. I really don't care who wins or loses but I do like to see some of my favourite actors and directors there. And I like Kimmel as a host.

I don't dispute that they can be fun to watch, but my question is if anyone actually believes that they are rewarding the best in their field (out of dozens, hundreds or even thousands of people) in for that particular year?

Well I myself couldn't care less if a movie has been Academy Award nominated. Some of the films I have most disliked have been so. For example, The Queen, which to me was just a tv movie and did not even deserve to be nominated for best film.

I think the Oscars are a load of pants - think how much money is spent on them. Tonight there will be loads of speeches about causes, however if they'd cancelled the Oscars and used the money spent (not just on them but on all that campaigning) for causes, imagine the good that could be done!

And, like the hypocrite I am... whenever (not that often) stuff I absolutely adore might or does win, I'm then like WOOHOO - The Oscars!!! The best! haha! Not really. I don't take them too seriously still, but I admit it is really nice if something I love wins and I do hope for an Oscar for things I love.

Also, the meaning is diminished - if one year you thought a terrible film won an Oscar, if another year the one you feel deserved won it is hard to feel it has much power even though you're happy.

reply

Oh for sure. All those speeches are part of their PR machine. They don't give a damn for their 'cause'.

I don't really get excited anymore about anyone winning an Oscar, no matter how much I like them. Maybe the last time I was, was for The Artist.

Individuals are unrelated to the Oscars though.. I don't know if the Oscars themselves work with charities? It still doesn't alter the money spent on the Oscars themselves though (or indeed, in Hollywood on many a [sometimes terrible] movie, I guess!)

reply

I'm sure some of 'these people' are truly philanthropic and they are the ones who don't publicise it to the world. But then you have a whole other bunch of 'these people', and the majority imo, who use philanthropy as a PR marketing strategy in order to improve their public image and keep their name in the press, when in natural fact, they probably pocket most of the money from their so-called foundations and give very little of their own personal money to charities. Plus there's also the TAX RELIEF factor and money laundering that lies behind their 'charity work/ foundations'.

Oh and to be fair, there are people from all walks of life who are philanthropic and who are doing much more to help others than many of these famous Hollywood people.

Maybe I'm just a big old cynic, hey? 😀 Or maybe I'm a realist.... 🤷

Sometimes you can get great moments, like Denzel and Halle winning in the same night, or the amazing speech of Kirk Douglas in front of his sons. Or more recently The Artist. Rare moments, the rest is too conventional.

And we don't care who is the designer of their dresses! Please ask about their work. This is not the home shopping channel! Or in years to come they'll add a phone line at the bottom of the screen, prices and number of pieces available!

reply

Oh I'm not saying they can't be enjoyable to watch, and like you say, sometimes you do get great moments, for sure. And I agree, who ares about the 'fashion', bla bla bla. That's so boring. They may as well BECOME the shopping channel! lol

I don't mind one or two for actors, but now there are so many award shows that it does seem irrelevant and like they're patting each other on the back ad nauseam. What they do isn't that important and most are overrated. Award shows are very political and acting like any art form is subjective.

And that goes double for singers/musicians and their award shows, too.
