Was Disney making fun of itself?

With all the references to the Disney Princesses, Star Wars and Marvel Characters, it was as if Disney was screaming from a tower: “See this? We own it! All of it!”.

Loved the movie! But it felt that way at times.

Or just advertising their own products.

reply

Yup! Plus they didn't have to pay licensing fees for the Disney-owned pop culture references.

Still, I'm willing to forgive, those were the funniest parts of the film.

reply

Blatant self-promotion, but ... Cinderella smashed her glass slipper like a beer bottle. That makes up for it.

Plus a stormtrooper used the Wilhelm Scream, which suggests respect for the source material

reply

Yeah, but they name- and logo-dropped nearly every single major internet website out there, some really huge names with severe clout, and so I'm sure Disney paid a pretty penny to advertise them.

reply

I'm actually not sure if they had to pay licensing fees, or if the companies paid Disney for product placement.

But they definitely loaded the film with free in-house stuff, why not.

reply

For me, more Disney's own things is even better because we don't really know when will eBay or any of the 'big names' today be irrelevant in the future. It's a fast changing landscape in tech land. But Disney's properties are pretty sure long lasting. I'm not really sure about Star Wars, but the princesses WILL stay, maybe forever.

reply

Lots of references, but why not premote your own properties?
