I'm diggin it so far (4 episodes in)

The animation tends to leave something to be desired, mainly with the movement of the characters. It can be clunky at times and facial expressions can be non-existant. However, it's still a step up from those movie versions. At least with this one, they tend to slow down the action every once in a while. Sadly, Guts often looks the worst out of every one. Either he looks oddly skinny or his face seems incapable of movement or he's moving around like a marionette. And sometimes the pencil shading is used in excess to the point of being distracting.

The music is typically really good but occasionally it gets oddly generic.

Those issues aside, the writing and the sense of horrific dread like we got in The Eclipse is extremely well done. The original anime oftentimes repetitively prattled on about psuedo-philosophical ideals that were never truly developed outside of blankly blurting them out. Here, we're getting some fantastic character development from Guts and from the female commander of the ... Holy army, or whatever they're called. That element alone is placing this show into "all time great" status for me. I imagine much of that is due to the manga itself, but either way, I'm really liking it. After re-watching Ghost in the Shell (2.0) last night, I can say, in terms of philosophical banter, this version of Berserk is on par with even that masterpiece.

Oh, and the encounters with the man-eating demons can be truly terrifying and unsettling. Maybe it's just my own personal preference, but there's something about human-eating monsters that unnerves me, particularly when they're intelligent, god-like entities. The animation and, especially, the voice acting in these sequences has been very well done.

You'd feel cocky too if you were full of myself.

5 episodes in and I seen enough to give my honest opinion. My initial impression wasn't very good, in fact I hated the first episode because the cgi animation reminded me of a PSX game. However if I learned anything from watching anime is never judge a show by its first episode. That being said, from episode 2 and onward the show drastically improved, the animation also vastly improved, and it looks like I'm watching an anime again rather than a PSX intro. My only gripe with the show now is the censorship, however I'm not too overly concerned since it seems like a simple adjustment for the DVD release.

I agree. A lot of people were complaining about certain things, namely the animation. My only complaint was with the 3 movies and that complaint was they left alot out. I'm glad to see this series is following the manga almost scene by scene. Except for the lost children arc, but I get that.

Now if only they can either use the OST from the first series or replicate the atmosphere the music brought, they'll have gold. The current music is just lackluster and not memorable at all.
