Anyone have thoughts on the first episode?

I thought the first episode, not great but not bad. I'm not a fan of that CGI animation but we'll see how it goes. Thoughts?

reply

Ya I'm not a fan of the cgi either. But if the story stays good I can look past it.

So, is this yet another retelling of the Golden Age arc?

Took out a lot from the original. Doesn't look like we'll be getting the full Tower of Conviction given that they cut out the business with Rosine.

I don't know if it was that as much as it was the content of that arc. I mean when you really look at it, and realize it's graphic violence involving children, it probably didn't pass US censors when they read it. So Japan had to cut it.

reply

Thought it was good. The slow motion dramatic parts seemed well done, and they portray the motion/weight of Guts sword very well. I am just happy to see anything with Guts, so I can forgive the CGI.
They really need to spend a little more time on Puck though, the detail on his face is atrocious. Additionally, did they need such an annoying voice for him?
I still don't get why the Berserk series (1997 and this new one) always seem to get underfunded...

reply

Been reading this series for 15 years now, and remember when the 97 anime came out to the US. It's cutting alot out, but the scenes that are in it are scene for scene from the manga. I don't care about the animation style, I'm just really really happy to see it brought to a different medium.

This series is seriously overlooked, and deserves to be made into movies or a show. I just want to see the fight on The Hill of Swords, and I'll be happy. God so happy.

Yeah, I just watched the third episode. They really toned down the attempted horse rape scene. And Farnese, for some reason, has no nipples on her breast; her vagina appears to just be a mound. They might just cut out the entire troll rape scene at this rate.

Noticed that in the second episode too with her nipples. WTH is up with that? I guess we can just take what we can and say at least we get to see some of it animated, at least the fight scenes look promising, but yeah the "graphic" content is getting cut out.

reply

Maybe cut for TV? It did look strange and it would be odd if it was cut for TV considering all the violence and blood. Only reason I can think of.

reply

Watched the 3rd episode too, the horse was still scary as hell though.
The only issue I have with show, is that scenes are cutting too fast. It's hard to follow what's going on when you only see scenes in bursts of microseconds. The camera even pans across environment shots waayy to fast.

So far I can forgive the CGI, it's okay and I kind of like what they're trying to do with the pen marks. Definitely gives the CGI some much needed texture, but I do prefer the original series' animation.

My main gripe so far is the music. I love heavy metal/rock and I don't mind the rock pieces, but so far none of the music is close to what the original had.

As others here, I am just happy to see Guts swinging that sword again. In a perfect world. someone with capital will go spruik this to Netflix.

reply

Right? I loved the first episode with that rock intro for Guts...Not gonna lie, the first time I read the chapter where he left Godo's house, I had a similar rock piece in my head, loved the "Sh!tz gonna get real piece", the rest meh. BTW did they explain how he got that behelit in the CGI movies, or is it still suppose to be a mystery? Because if they skipped that chapter then the only way he could have got it was from the Snake Count. I don't think he fights Lord Slug in any medium other than the manga.

reply

I don't believe they have. At a guess it might be shown through a flashback? It's pretty important to the story so I can't see the writers skipping out on it.

And I agree with the rock music, it does work, but not all the time. The original series had a number of a different styles of music set pieces, the show currently lacks that. It needs more variety and just rock for everything doesn't work.

reply

That's true, but the rock piece in the first episode was good. I know the rest of the score is a remix of the movie's soundtrack. Also, if you're up to date on the manga, you're absolutely right about the behelit being important. I knew there was a reason they kept bringing it up.

reply

I really don't like the animation and feel like it does great injustice to the gorgeous dark and lavish world that is Berserk. The music also leaves something to be desired.

However, like others mentioned, it just feels so nice to see badass Guts again and new storyline in the media again, that I'll continue watching this weekly. The genius of Miura still shines through and that creepy attempted horse thing in Episode 3 was awesomely disturbing.

I hope that maybe if they get this renewed, they'll get more budget and fix the music and animation (kind of like Sailor Moon Crystal did for Season 3).

reply

Yeah, they tend to fix up animation and artifacts with Bluray/Home releases, so I wouldn't fret it too much at this point.
