Indira Varma

I've never heard of her but my god she's awful in this. It may be the character and writing rather than the acting but she's so unbelievable and forced.

I liked the show. It's interesting (not sure about 8 episodes though) and most of the characters are okay but Nina just annoyed the hell out of me so far

Yeah, the story was interesting, but some of the main characters were just a bit too strangely written. The German police were alright. They had a believable blend of eccentricity and competence. The British police, and especially Varma's character, just took things too far.

reply

Maybe it's just me who found it so, difficult to explain why. Hopefully I'll gain some clarity with the next episode.

reply

Ive found her incredibly unlikable in every single thing I've seen her in! She's horrible in this too.

Goodnight, good luck and may your God go with you

I'm afraid I have to agree, as much as I want to like her (and other actresses leading TV shows like this). I've now seen her in Bride and Prejudice, Luther, Game of Thrones, and now Paranoid. She always seems to play steely, eye-rolling, holier-than-thou characters who are contemptuous of old, ugly, and poor people, or people who don't adore her. In Paranoid, it's tiring seeing her give her colleagues Bobby and Megan the extreme side-eye whenever they try to contribute something to the case. Her character would be super annoying to work with. And she wonders why her boyfriend thinks she's crazy. “At the end of the road there's always a mirror!”

reply

I think she played the part really well, which is why I hated her character. I hope that's not what she's like in real life.

I read an interview with her once and she was exactly like that.

Horrible character combined with woeful performance = me not watching again.

You're my wife now.

It's badly directed and edited, it just seems so rushed too, IMO that is what makes the acting in this appear so bad.

pity because the story seems interesting, I'll continue to watch but only because I live where they filmed it.

I agree. Very choppy.

And I agree that the character of Nina is over the top irritating. There's such a thing as making a character quirky enough to be interesting and making one so annoying it drives viewers away. She comes very close to the second.

I've continued to watch because it has a couple of actors I really like: the one who plays Bobby Day (Glenister?) who I've seen in British period dramas (Persuasion, I think) and the actor who plays Fairweather, who I first saw in Downton Abbey but now seem to see everywhere.

The story/plot is so-so, and I think the big conspiracy reveal is not going to be all that Big -- just another bash of big corporations, namely Big Pharma. And I'm think they could have done the same thing in 5 episodes (I see some repetition and filler) but on the other hand I'm glad the actors and crew got the additional paydays.

It's not the writing, she is genuinely a lousy actress and is godawful in absolutely everything she's ever been in. It's a shame, because the show itself showed promise, but it's difficult to watch when you have to fast forward through her scenes.

so bollocks is bad, but dogs bollocks is good?

reply

Ha! So it's not just me then, and she is a terrible actress. I'm hoping she'll be murdered at the start of ep 2 but somehow I doubt it.

reply

No one would put up with the character's behaviour in real life, she'd be told to piss off

reply

The character is utterly repellent. He behaviour constitutes workplace harassment as far as I can see.

I agree with the previous poster, I can't see anyone putting up with her in real life!

I can't imagine how the boyfriend managed to hang in there for 4 years!

reply

Debbieblackman17 . Was surprised to read your reply that said 8 episodes. You are right. I too share your concern. Does seem Four too many.

reply

Yes, at this point, I'm not sure how they'll drag it out for 8 episodes

Nina is so annoying. So smug and almost a split personality. I prefer Linda, the foreign detective

reply

I agree. I thought it was just me but came on here and I'm not alone in thinking what a douche actress she is and SO annoying. I can't bear watching this with her In it. She overacts far too much. She's now on my hit list along with Keira Knightly.

reply

Funny, I actually like her in everything she does.
