just an observation

Do some on these US gold medal winners not know the words to their national anthem? At first I thought they just didn't want to sing along but then I would see them utter a few lines then stop which made me think they didn't know the words.

It's probably a combination of being so overcome with emotion as well as not knowing a few specific lines. They're not going to be able to belt out a Whitney Houston style version of the song while they're in the state they are.

True. They're emotions must be over the top, Phelps looked like he was going to cry (before his buddies cracked him up).
I would hope they all know the words but then again, I don't even know if kids learn it in school, anymore. We all learned it during our music class which I'm not sure some schools even have, now.

I would say a lot of them don't know the words, or only know some of them. Most people know the last refrain, so you'll often see them singing that, even if they didn't do the beginning. I'm always getting the first part mixed up myself.

I don't care if they don't know the words to the song, but I've seen a bunch of American athletes who are not placing their hand over their heart during the anthem. That is more unforgivable than not knowing the song.

Dragonflye - I agree. I saw that also. It really bothers me.

Or worse the people in the background (stands) that do not remove their ball caps or hats. That's a diss IMHO.
