Leonard's alibi and Romaine's letter

At the trial, doesn't Romaine's letter and assignation, even though the letter talks about implicating a naive Leonard, still lose him his alibi and any proof that he was at home that evening?

It doesn't mean he was at Emily's house either but it's strange that it's that evidence that completely lets him off, when it actually goes against his story of being at home with her.

Only watched it once so might have mis-remembered.

If I remember right the letter states that he was with her at the time of the murder.

The letter implies that his wife's evidence is a lie and that she had a motive to lie.

It's that man again!!

It does more than imply that the evidence is a lie. It expressly states that Romaine's evidence is an intentional lie, and gives a motive for the lie. Effectively it says "Max: I will lie about him not being home even though he was... then poor innocent Leonard will be found guilty and hanged. After that you and I can get married"
