How come there are no therapists in Gylliad(sp?)? What ofMatthew was going through clearly required therapy.. The poor girl was terrified of giving birth; especially after seeing the other handmaiden give birth to a stillborn child.. Putting her in a chair and having the other ladies point and call her a sinner was completely childish and counterproductive to the ultimate goal of her having a healthy child. Further upsetting her could have easily led to a miscarriage.

They never state it outright, but for me it's safe to assume the leaders of Gilead think psychotherapy is a bunch of bullshit, and that people just need to suck it up and obey the Word of God. Those that can't cope with that, to hell with them, they're weak, it's part of how the weak get weeded out. It's simply a component of Gilead's hubris, stubbornness and general stupidity.
