so when are they going to address Commander Winslow's gayness?

There must have been some point to showing us his interest in Waterford, right?

And now it's already apparently been months since they met.

Thank You! I just watched the latest episode (7/31), and was thinking the same thing! He had her on the bed and told her to turn over and I was sure she would be given all the ammunition she needed to take him down politically. However we got a truly wasted plot-devise and a wasted character in Christopher Meloni. (A great actor). The way he was unceremoniously disposed of makes me wonder if the writers are sacrificing good story lines because of the backlash of seasons 2's tough to digest scenes, which most people derided as "torture porn". This is a show about a dystopian world, of coarse some of the story lines are going to be hard to watch. That doesn't mean they should not be explored. If anything, they serve as a warning of what may come to pass if we are not careful to check ourselves.

and I was sure she would be given all the ammunition she needed to take him down politically

What do you mean?

reply

Yeah, a handmaid would have a real hard time trying to prove an accusation against a commander. She would basically need a male witness and none of the men would be willing to go up against him publicly.

reply

not really. Janine publicly said that her commander had relations with her behind the wife's back and promised her things and he had his hand lopped off. this was at the bridge when she tried to jump with the baby.

reply

Except that what does telling her to turn over even prove?? Straight men have sex doggy style, as well as anal sex.

I really don't understand what point that commenter was trying to make with that.

reply

I mean that he wanted to sodomize her.

reply

That is not a proof of homosexuality. As I stated in the above comment, straight men have sex doggy style, as well as anal sex. Telling her to turn over, by itself, means literally nothing.

reply

Ok. All of that is true in real life, but, in the show it is a trope. There are several instantses where a homosexual male who is married with a family would go out and pay woman hookers for anal sex. Couple that with the camera shots of him gazing either longingly or suspiciously at Fred, and you can see where I might draw that conclusion. He is obviously in the closet and finding a gay partner in Gilead would likely get him executed. So, he finds "Jezebels" and treats them like men. I doubt there is a Jezebels that caters to gay men since that would be considered a gender crime. As would, I think, anal sex with boys or girls.

reply

Someone doing it from behind to a woman doesn't automatically mean anal sex. Vaginal sex from behind is doggy style. Just making a woman turn around does not automatically mean they're about to have anal sex.

reply

Even if it was for anal sex, though, I am sure anything goes at the brothel. When June came out all banged up, no one bat an eye - I would guess commanders can maim and mutilate (probably even kill) the Jezebels with complete impunity, let alone use all their orifices.

reply

Ok, but how can they be sure that the Jezabels aren't secretly working for the Eyes? They even place members of the Eye in commanders homes, why not at a brothel?

reply

What is it with you, taking months to reply each time?

Doesn't exactly make for a meaningful exchange, so I see no point in continuing.

You'll probably see this message in only three months anyway.

reply

Sorry. I'm a busy person. I don't get to spend much time online for my personal enjoyment. I reply when I am able to. I don't mean to be standoffish.

reply

To tease the gay viewers and keep them watching.

reply

I'm not sure it needed to be made into a big event..Wasn't this just another way to show the huge hypocrisy that existed in Gilead?
Most people would have been put on the wall for many of the traits of the Commanders and they were even the ones that created the laws. Anything other than procreation was a death warrant for anyone else.

reply

Well, my take on it was that Winslow would have required sexual favors in order to do anything for Waterford (and not just mine - see https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2019/06/26/the-handmaids-tale-season-3-episode-6-review-in-household-silence-is-golden/#5c5ede94287c, the photo captions are pretty hilarious), that sure seemed where the story was going - and then boom, they just abandon the whole thing never to bring up again.

Although this was true of many story lines this season.

reply

yeah, it was just to show the leaders as hypocrites, like leaders of all nutjob factions.
