In the series, it seems the passing of time is not marked by any holidays or birthdays (of the commanders or wives). Being such a pious government isn't it strange that they do not mark / observe any religious holidays? The women are given baby showers, but no birthday celebrations?

Not strange at all. Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate holidays and birthdays, as they don't consider them "Biblical."

True but I don’t think JW do baby showers either.

They actually do have baby showers.
