U.S. Among 10 Most Dangerous Countries for Women...

... and the only western one on the list.

#1 most dangerous country is India
#2 Afghanistan
#3 Syria
#4 Somalia
#5 Saudi Arabia
#6 Pakistan
#7 Congo
#8 Yemen
#9 Nigeria
#10 United States

The survey is based on "high rates of violence against women, a lack of economic resources, health care issues and traditions that perpetuate strict gender roles." It was a survey of 550 experts on women issues conducted by The Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The U.S. made the list because of "sexual violence, including rape, sexual harassment, coercion into sex and a lack of access to justice in rape cases.
1 out of 5 women have been raped in the U.S..

Dont know where you get 1 out of 5 women in the US get raped. I live there and Im calling BS.

reply

National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey conducted by the CDC. They have been doing the survey for years and their stats are consistent.

How NISVS Measured Sexual Violence:
"Rape is any completed or attempted unwanted vaginal (for women), oral, or anal penetration through the use of physical force (such as being pinned or held down, or by the use of violence) or threats to physically harm and includes times when the victim was drunk, high, drugged, or passed out and unable to consent. Rape is separated into three types: completed forced penetration, attempted forced penetration, and completed alcohol- or drug-facilitated penetration. Among women, rape includes vaginal, oral, or anal penetration by a male using his penis. It also includes vaginal or anal penetration by a male or female using their fingers or an object..."

Approximately 1 in 5 (21.3% or an estimated 25.5 million) women in the U.S. reported completed or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime. About 13.5% of women experienced completed forced penetration, 6.3% experienced attempted forced penetration, and 11.0% experienced completed alcohol/drug-facilitated penetration at some point in their lifetime.

In the U.S., 1.2% of women (approximately 1.5 million) reported completed or attempted rape in the 12 months preceding the survey.

I saw your article before I linked my information. According to your article's definition of rape, Bill Cosby didn't rape anyone.

NCVS defines rape: "Rape is forced sexual intercourse and includes both psychological coercion as well as physical force.

That definition is antiquated and was last updated in 1992:
https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/FEMVIED.PDF

The present definition of rape is: nonconsensual sex. That would include being drugged or drunk, sex with a minor, someone who is passed out. Basically someone who hasn't consented because of their age or their mental state as well as physical force and coercion.

My guess is that the government is trying to keep the stats artificially low by using a rape definition that is narrow and very old.

Your article was also written in 2014 and refers to a 2011 survey. My link is a 2015 survey which addresses some of the issues stated in the article. I linked it in order that people could examine the methodology that was used.

reply

Lack of economic resources? Hysterical much?

reply

My typo. I should have wrote "access to economic resources". In plain English it means women not being allowed to work or job discrimination, etc.

reply

Which is not true in the US.

reply

Of course, it is. Women earn less than men for the same job, sexual harassment, discrimination for higher-paying jobs and traditional male jobs.

reply

Dude... you are welcome to live somewhere else.

reply

What makes you think I'm a "dude"? Misogyny takes many forms such as being in denial.

reply

I am a woman.

reply

You must live in a cave since you're so unaware of sexism in the workplace and throughout society.

reply

I just don't blame everything that happens to me on outside forces. I know many very successful women, and am doing quite well myself (and would have been further along in my career if not for my own laziness).

reply

Are you sure that your laziness isn't caused by the apathy defense mechanism you've employed because you're always being raped by men?

reply

Are you trolling the OP?

reply

Lol, yes. Just making a smart-ass comment about the rampant blame game that is prevalent today. It takes away from the actual tragedies.

reply

Yeah, some people just don't want to take any responsibility for their own lives.

reply

Rape is such a serious topic that statistics cannot be debated. Only believed. Believed or else. Who in their right mind would challenge these stats? To publish any evidence counter to this would make you an honorary rapist. Even to have mild suspicions would get you in the lead role as villain in a show like this.

reply

To believe this is a dangerous precedent for anyone innocent or naive that might visit some place like Syria or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia or any of the other places mentioned..not be prepared...and discover what real misogyny and female subjugation truly is.
I don't know any women that walks around feeling "unsafe" in the USA as compared to some of these other countries.
Dig deeper..a great deal of this is swayed by the METOO movement..which has been diluted by the ability of any accusation being automatically believed and under a umbrella of definitions of what assault and harassment is.

reply

The survey was done long before the metoo movement.

To say other countries are worst; therefore there is no problem in the U.S. defies logic. Denial doesn't make a serious problem go away. The point being that American women do feel unsafe which is why women carry guns, knives, mace or learn martial arts.

reply

Interesting..I never said there is "no problem" in the USA..That explains how you handle context.
Do you live in the USA? No place is perfect but this survey is disingenuous.
Are there problems that should realistically put us in the top 10?
A definite NO..

And many of the other countries mentioned are dealing with true human rights violations..not a joking matter..but putting them in the same camp as the USA is beyond ridiculous.
If you do a little research and see how the survey was done rather then appeal to what you want to believe than you'll see how unreliable this survey is..

Here's a big for instance...if someone has sex with someone while under the influence and that automatically constitutes assault (even if consensual at the time)... then guess what? That would also qualify the male under the influence who wishes he hadn't as also being a victim of assault.

The number of young people that consensually have sex under the influence and wish they hadn't is a ridiculously high number for both sexes but it doesn't "automatically" constitute assault or rape and this is one of those questions out of context that raises these statistics.

reply

I believe the OP is a troll.

reply

Why would linking an article about the 10 most dangerous countries for women in a board for a series about the oppression of women trolling? The article is informative if you read it.

reply

It's a good link, and an appropriate thread.
I don't know why some of these people even watch the show.
They don't seem to like it or be in touch with the issues involved in the plot.

reply

Well, it's more than a little alarmist to call the US, of all places, one of the most dangerous countries for women. Where is Russia on that list, for instance, or any of the former Soviet republics, where sexual assault is an everyday occurrence and sexism is institutionalized?

It's very hard to take the OP seriously, and I don't see why any critically thinking person would advocate for it.

reply

critically thinking people look at facts. I'm very glad you are in a position of safety, until you're not.

reply

Oh, these are not facts.

reply

Provide a link to a factual study from a credible source that contradicts mine.

reply

Obviously, Russian didn't make the top 10.

Rape 2011 stats:

Russia:
4,907 Ranked 8th
Rapes per million people - 34.46 Ranked 37th

U.S.:
84,767 Ranked 1st. 17 times more than Russia
Rapes per million people - 274.04 Ranked 9th. 8 times more than Russia

How sad, but as a traveller and woman, I think these statistics are helpful. I'm interested to see where other countries rank.
