Has anyone here seen this yet?

If so, what did you think? Is it worth watching?

reply

I haven't yet! I love the book so much that I'm nervous!

reply

I haven't read the book in years, and thought it was depressing, but well written. I can understand your being nervous about seeing it, since you love the book so much!

reply

I hated the book, i do not like Margaret Atwood's "voice" but the series is very fine filmmaker ng, surprising for tv best i have seen thus far i think you'd like it

reply

I watched the first two episodes, and so far it's good. Still depressing and chilling as the book. It's been a while sinse I read it, but I think they're sticking to it pretty closely.

I was a bit apprehensive about Yvonne Strahovski, because, if I remember correctly, Serena Joy is supposed to be older, but she's good in the role.

It's shot nicely, and the performances are good. I think it's worth checking out.

reply

Thanks! Good to know. It's been ages since I read it, but the fact that Elizabeth Moss stars in it made me hopeful it'd be well done.

Depressing and chilling, yep, that's how I felt about the book.

They already made a movie in 1990 so why did they revive it again? Maybe because of Trump. I heard it got good reviews.

reply

Didn't know they'd made a film of it earlier. But then remakes in film and TV, and cover songs in music, have been on the rise.

Thanks! Wow, great sets, very creepy-atmospheric. Kinda like Nazi Germany, yet different.

Hey, I don't know if this is a new MC feature or not, but have never seen it before. At the bottom of the email notification there's a small graphic of the video, which is clickable! Also, your YouTube link was made clickable in the notification. Pretty swell, eh?

You may as well ask why did they did a new BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

Dramatic properties are often remade.

This summer, they're releasing the third version of Spiderman since 2002. 1990 is practically ancient history by that standard.

reply

1990 movie was awful and bastardized the novel, this series is more faithful to the book.

reply

It's fine in every cinematic element, earl, i highly recommend it. :)

SPOILER ALERT!

STUFF I HATE:
Ineffective or gratuitously violent changes from book. Janine's eye instead of her feet? Puhleeze.

Offred kills with enthusiasm at the scavenging. It has not yet been revealed that 1) Oglen is resisting or 2) the victim is NOT a rapist but another resistance member. Instead, Offred is portrayed as killing gladly in revenge for the rape she has just suffered at the hands of the commander (the ceremony).

Pretentiously, self-importantly slow-paced. Makes the movie seem much better.

STUFF I LIKE:
Added material that shows us more of this terrible new world. Ofglen is arrested for homosexuality with a Martha, not for resisting. We see what happens to gender traitors. Though I'm not sure what they did to Ofglen. That's another thread.

How about the rest of you?

She was subjected to FGM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Female_genital_mutilation), and then Lydia tells her that she "won't want what she cannot have", i.e. same-sexual desires.

reply

It's been a while since I've read the book. What did they do to Janine's feet?

Maybe they'll reveal later that the "rapist" was from the resistance. And even though they changed the scavenging from the book, it was still chilling to watch (for me at least).

Generaly I'm OK with the changes and expansion of the book (maybe because I don't remember all the details). And I'm even Ok with the narration, something I usually hate.

reply

They beat them, probably with a cane because they were cut up and bloody.

reply

I watched the first episode and thought that the story is a little too dark and tries too hard to be shocking.

reply

It is so well made, one of the best series i have watched on American TV. I think it must be partnered with Canadian television or BbC because it is filmmaking at its finest
