Everyone's too young by 10 to 30 years

I like the cast, they're all pretty good. Well, except Moss who's pitiful.

But why is it that tv shows can't seem to have anyone over 40 in the cast?

Fiennes and Strahovsky are fine actors but it makes no sense for them to be so young and pretty.

I agree. Moss is actually the right age. Early to mid 30s. But I don't like her much and Strahovsky is good but WAY. TOO. YOUNG. I so agree. Feinnes I could go either way on. He's no spring chicken so that's fine I guess, but Strahovsky is a BAD choice for Serena Joy.

reply

Why is Moss pitiful? She did an awesome job on Mad Men. :/

reply

And Strahovsky is 34...?

reply

Serena Joy is supposed to be in her 50's and a woman with aging health issues. Strahovsky is too much a model barbie type for that kind of a role. And not old enough.

reply

^^ EXACTLY!!!! I like Strahovsky, but I think she would have been better as a Handmaid & have the Serena Joy role be someone older.

I really love the movie, so I don't know how to feel about this being a series.

My thoughts exactly.

...and I had an idea...Stahovsky as Ofglen! There's something that would work.

Oooh, yeah!!!

I know she's way too busy right now, but what about Gillian Anderson as Serena Joy? She's 48, which might still be a bit young. I would probably keep seeing her as Bedelia from Hannibal though. That sort of icy, self-contained persona. :D

ETA: I guess Faye Dunaway was only like 49 when she did the movie, so 48 would be okay. 😊

Indeed. Faye was such a great choice for the role in that time, and I feel she did a tremendous job. The role in the film was pretty thankless but Faye made it work pretty good. I wouldn't mind Catherine Mary Stewart in the role myself. She approaches all her work with such enthusiasm. It'd be a good thing to check...though she's actually nearing 60. Still looks great.

reply

I refuse to believe that Regina from Night of the Comet is almost 60. I REFUSE!!! ;P

HaHa! Nope not quite 60, but sure could be Serena Joy I'd say. 

I'm now assuming that this adaptation is going to go pretty far from the source material. I thought if it held close to the book it'd be a season at most now I'm betting they are going to try to expand the story and have more than one season. I'm even wondering if the book is just going to be used as a template for world building and the jumping off point.

reply

I wouldn't be surprised SuspectVendetta. I figured it'd be a Mini-Series like that Stephen King one Hulu did last year or the year before, but you never know.

reply

Elizabeth Moss is the right age. Offred is 33 in the book, and Moss is 34. Joseph Fiennes is 46, so not egregiously young, but I always thought the Commander was well into his 50s. There were multiple references to his gray hair and aging body. I think Ralph Fiennes would have been a more accurate casting than Joseph Fiennes.

Strahovsy as Serena Joy is the one that doesn't make sense at all. There's no way Serena Joy is the same age as Offred. She is an aging former pop star turned right-wing religious activist, but by the time the events in the book take place she has already withdrawn from public live. She has severe arthritis and can't walk without a cane.

The whole point of handmaids is to birth children for men whose wives are too old to conceive. That premise kinda goes out the window when the wife is the same age as the handmaid. I guess the series will make up another reason for Serena's infertility.

reply

KeepingItClassy you missed the point the concubines are not being used as birth mothers because the elite wives cannot due to age. The elite are unable to conceive, at least in the original source material, due to the sterilizing effects of the chemical warfare of the country's recent past.

This may change in the future because of the economy but advertisers go for younger people because they are more willing on stupid things then wiser adults. Many adults (but not all) learn to control their fast food intake but teenagers and people in their early 20s are more willing to eat fast food.

Same with gadgets. Most adults I know don't worry about buying a new smart phone unless the old one they own is dying. It's kids in their 20s you worry that their phone is 5 years old.

reply

I highly doubt that they'd be catering to a younger demographic, and you're giving no credit to young people, which is not fair. As a young person in my early 20s, I can promise you that the perception you have of us, that we're just hooked on consumerism and want the next big thing, is so wrong. In fact, to my understanding, it's those in their 30s who are like that, because they grew up in a more conflicting era, a tough transitioning period. People in their late teens/20s have been around technology and products being shoved into our faces in almost every movie/video we watch.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, the cast comes from more serious roles and have a more adult following than say, the cast of Scream Queens. Moss was in Mad Men: While many teens and young adults liked that show, the target audience was clearly a more mature one that almost felt nostalgic watching this show. (Either they lived in those times, or those characters reminded them of someone they knew.) Same with almost every other person in the cast.

I agree about having a 30-something year old actress play a 50-something year old character, especially since the older age is important to the plot. We'll see how it's explained. Can't wait for this.

reply

I think the entire cast so far will not fit their roles, regardless of their ability to act. I can't remember if Moira was a black woman from the book but Samira Wiley may have the right spirit for the character. As for the others, maybe once hair, make-up and wardrobe get finished with them, they'll fit better.

reply

She (Moira) wasn't in the book, in the book 'African-Americans' were called the 'Children of Ham' and shipped to a colony in the Midwest.

Moira most definitely was in the book.

Sorry, I misunderstood your post. It sounded like you meant Moira wasn't a character in the book. I realize now you meant she wasn't a black woman in the book. Sometimes I'm stupid. 😀

reply

That's ok, I wasn't very clear. Also I'm sure you are not stupid.
