I'm sorry but none of the handmaidens should be black

I get that we all have to be culturally sensitive and we all have to have our little safe spaces but none of the handmaidens should be black including Moira. The republic of gilead sent away/killed all the black people and people from different races/religions (other than the hybrid religion seen in the book).

reply

I agree, that was a major part of the story -Gilead was not an inclusive society - It loses a lot of it's meaning with this change

reply

Facts like that don't matter now. Whomever cries the loudest will be heard.

-Dad, who's that?
-Oh, that? One of my patients. He's...sick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.

reply

I agree, having read the book in high school.

They try to explain it away here:

reply

Normally, I'd start a flame war with someone who griped because there were black, Asian, Latino, etc. people in a story that didn't specifically indicate race or ethnicity. But in this case, I'm in complete agreement with you. The whole point of Gilead is it's a white man's world. The book even makes this explicitptly clear. There would probably be black women in brothels, and possibly in the "Martha" class, but not as hand maids -- unless they were passing., which would certainly be interesting and add new dimensions to the story.

reply

Perhaps they will include a reason as to why a black woman will be able to join. If it's written in a clever way then I don't mind the change from the book.

reply

Having not read the book, i would just assume that they were so desperate for fertile women - with deformed children and low conception rates - that they took even the black people deemed 'blessed by god'.

reply

The problem is people are stupid.

What I learned from feminists complaining about the rapes in Game of Thrones was if you have a rape scene that means you condone rape in the mind of feminists. The book wasn't supporting white supremacy but idiots would watch the show and assume it is because they wouldn't say "this is bad" every 20 seconds. There is no concept of context for idiots.

reply

True, in the book black people were killed and at least a boat full of Jews as well. They should stick with that script.

reply

Sure, they could stick to the book but ratings would suffer and it all comes down to money. POC are a huge market and they don't want to watch a series that kills them all off. Lol. Especially, in this current political climate. Film/TV adaptions of books always make big changes for marketability purposes. No big deal. Most viewers won't care. It's fiction so it's not a big deal.

reply

Yeah, I know. It doesn't really matter. In a way it bugs me like it bugs me when they attempt to remove the n-word from 19th century works of fiction. It seems disrespectful to make thing prettier than they are. We're not all dancing in a field of flowers. I realize that this is a fictional story, but the author seems to use it a vassal for social criticism.

I don't know. As a white person, I don't think it's my place to have a strong opinion about this in either direction, but my initial reaction was that it feels inappropriate.

I agree. Revisionism is wrong. "Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Well, sure--except this makes you sound like you think that The Handmaid's Tale was a book of historical nonfiction, when it was actually a novel. It's fiction, not an account of something that actually happened in the past. The fact that some people now are finding it relevant to our current political situation doesn't change the fact that its story never literally happened.

If the people who are making this novel into a TV show decide to change the story, it's not the same as if they had somehow revised a historical event or failed to "remember the past."

Hey, you're not the singer, are you? !!!

When Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," he wasn't talking about changing the story in a novel. You were the one who used that quotation (well, paraphrase) incorrectly.

I get the right-wing ding-bat morons have to ridicule and insult polite nice human-rights respecting people so they can continue to justify their sick selfish BS view of the world ... so why don't you just leave out all the BS. They have to do something in a TV not to be insulting to possible viewers, but I guess that is unimportant to you.

reply

Again, I don't get why you haven't been banned yet.
