Sorry, this has NOTHING to do with Resident Evil!

Like Art-Official said in his rant video last summer, this is NOT a Resident Evil game at all. This is coming from a guy (me!) who has stuck by this franchise through everything they have churned out.

Just putting some unlucky guy in a large house and adding in some familiar stuff that RE fans will scoff at doesn't make it part of the true series' connection. Granted, I haven't played the game, but it shouldn't matter a squeak. I've seen many leaked parts over the last few days, and this game has literally nothing to do with the series' so-called 'roots' or anything from the prior games, making it a sequel in name only. If anything, it's T.C.M. meets P.A. meets T.H.H.E. meets some weird science fiction story. This could easily pass as another spin off.

If you look at like that then there is no true resident evil.

For fans of original first 3 and remake like me,
RE 4-6 is no true resident evil ethier in that case cus they changed the formula, yet 4 is considered great by many.

And they do wanted to return to the roots when characters felt vulnerable not some trained soldier with super moves and full arsenal that can take on everything in its way.

If you say RE7 is no true Resident evil then same logic can be applied to Resident evil 4 and the titles thereafter.

Me I like RE7 the atmosphere is back,it feels like the original in many ways walking and exploring,puzzles,notes/videotapes.
Newer games did not leave much to atmosphere or exploration just blast and punch/kick your way through one stage to next.

one feel fear again which I personally did not feel about the later installments.

And pls its not like the first time a company change a series gameplaywise or other.

For me this feels more like a "true" (in this case original) resident evil than 4,5,6 actionfeast ever felt.

It's back too horror again, vulnerble protaganist instead of super trained Chris and Leon with super moves and full weapon arsenal blasting everything in it's way.

The protaganist is what Chris,Jill,Claire and Leon where in their first game they starred.

Vulnerable, fighting for their life against something unknown.

I played through all Resident Evil titles even the awful Residen evil Gaiden.

By your logic there is no "true" resident evil cus capcom had tried various formula in the past 3rd person,First person, multiplayer, onrail shooters all of them Residen Evil.

I like some more and some less in the series but I have played them all.

RE7 is as true as the rest.

reply

This isn't a long reply, but the game's title on IMDb omits the 7, so it's wrong.

reply

Darkside Chronicles had no number ethier but capcom themself said its part of the mainline story as if feat. How Leon first met Krauser and takes place before 4.

Also
Producer Masachika Kawata was adamant that Resident Evil 7 is best as a true numbered sequel rather than a reboot or spinoff of some sort. So while not numbered here in this site Capcom themself say this is Resident evil 7.

Also when asked about the shift away from bombastic action, Kawata said: "We had three consecutive Resident Evil titles filled with action, and we figured this would be a good time to switch gears and challenge ourselves to do something new.

reply

Well, you were wrong. The last third of the game, and the ending, reveal that ties into the Umbrella storyline of the original games.

reply

Yeah, but one could argue that again, the inclusion of familiar things like herbs, weapons, the health meter, and Umbrella rising from the ashes is just so they can make it seem like it belongs in the saga, to try and please people like me (who would moan about it not belonging in the series if it had no loose connection). At least they've added in a new type of enemy, which is always fascinating to see as the story progresses over the years.

Now, I'm not saying the game is in any way unimpressive, because it is very well made. However, this game still feels more like a spin off, or perhaps a set-up to a future numbered title, that will hopefully be made in third person, but actually could be terrifying like the remake of the original, instead of the awful action style found in games like 4, 5 and 6. Nothing can touch that remake.

Think about it: It doesn't have any of the regular characters at all which is a first for the franchise. The only thing that really is alike is the fact you are attacked by a weird family in a mansion, and you look for keys and things to upgrade your guns or whatever. It is just a different experience, but an interesting one nonetheless.

This is the first main resident evil game to have a new protagonist since RE2. Ya i guess in 6 there are 3 new main characters to play as, but they are paired with the returning characters (Leon, Chris, Sherry). I think its cool that we have a new protagonist to join the ranks of Chris and Leon. RE7 is still very much a resident evil game, especially if you play it on madhouse difficulty (limited saves). i like how this series reinvents itself after so long.

At least they got away from that pile of garbage 6. Played all of them for years several times over. Couldnt even finish 6. Pitiful crap.

I think theres a news article or journal in 7 where the head of the family talks about a ship washing into the swamp during a storm. I'm assuming its a ship from revelations so theres a connection. I still havent finished the game yet though, working on it.

It's actually the tanker Mia was on.

reply

Oh it's connected to the other games. its like this, the old story has ended, there's no need to continue with that terrible storyline. So a new story is introduced here. By the looks of it Umbrella is reformed and possibly under the leadership of Chris Redfield. he shows up in the game and there is a free upcoming dlc about him.
Many of the memos found through out the game suggest that what is happening in this game concerning the bio weapon known as Eve started in the past. it basically reveals that the so called rival company to umbrella, Tentsu created eve. the company was then forced to hide her to protect her from other rival organizations. Tentsu has been mentioned in past games, just never in name, only as "the rival company".
It's not a spin off but rather the start of a new story involving a new type of bio weapon. One of the Baker family members, Lucas, actually escapes, so he's still out there, as well as his younger sister Zoe. Lucas was infected but was suppressing the urge to turn from Mia thanks to Tentsu, who he was secretly working with. Zoe is also infected no matter what choice you make as to who to give the cure to. the true ending involves curing Mia, not zoe. So she's still infected.
It's possible Lucas and Zoe will play a role in upcoming games. Not in dlc because it's been revealed that besides the Chris "not a hero' dlc, there are two other dlc packs containing two vhs tapes each. 4 total. all of them as more back story. 3 of them are flashbacks revealing more to the game and one of them probably deals with Lucas again and another puzzle room you have to figure out how to escape from.

Or it could be an imposter, kind of like what was originally planned for "Revelations" but dropped.

Oh give me a break with that fanboy crap. It's "RE", get over it. It has inventory management, it has creatures, it has puzzles, it has body horror, it has atmosphere, corporate espionage, outbreaks and B-movie cheese - THAT is all "Resident Evil". And this is coming from someone who's been a fan since the original PS1 game came out.

"Granted, I haven't played the game, but it shouldn't matter a squeak."

Eh, yeah it does. A person can't just give a brief once-over at something and immediately say "ITS NOT A "TRUE" (INSERT TITLE OF FRANCHISE HERE)" or "it's $hit" (or in the extreme case of "No Man's Sky" a "masterpiece) - that mentality is arrogant and childish, even downright stupid. It's fine to have reservations about something, even initial impressions, but to declare that it's "not a "true" "RE" on those alone will create problems.

First of all, we're all entitled to our opinion of a product. Secondly, I'm not a fanboy. I don't buy absolutely everything related to a series obsessively. That's what a fanboy does. Oh, and I did finish RE7 by the time of you posting this and enjoyed it, and my opinion is largely the same. Maybe it's gonna be seen as the next generation of the series to some people, but to the longtime fans, it's entirely new, and so it's bound to receive a mixed response.

"First of all, we're all entitled to our opinion of a product."

That's not an issue - it's fine for people to have differing opinions and tastes, but to proclaim something as being "bad" or "not a "true" (insert title of franchise here)" without having played, read or watched said-thing is ridiculous. THAT was my issue.

"Secondly, I'm not a fanboy. I don't buy absolutely everything related to a series obsessively. That's what a fanboy does"

People that tend to use the "true" rhetoric, be it in building themselves up as "true" fans/putting people down as not "true" fans/putting other products within said-series down for not being exactly like the original(s) with little in the way of reflexivity, etc, are by and large fanboys.

"and I did finish RE7 by the time of you posting this and enjoyed it, and my opinion is largely the same."

You have to have a sense of proportion, dude. Whenever there's a sequel or reboot, something is always going to be changed. It's not a question of change, it's a question of whether the good outweighs the bad and whether or not the core has been preserved. In comparison to a lot of other properties, especially the disasters that were "RE5" (are you seriously going to defend Redfield punching boulders in volcanoes?), "Operation Racoon City", "Revelations", etc, this is pretty close to the original "RE" games.
