Accents make it unwatchable

The accents are too strong even for my Brit drama tuned ears.
This looks interesting but I have had to rewind and listen to the dialogue too many times.

You can use subtitle or "close captions" if you can. i know it's annoying but that's the only way for me at least

reply

I didn't even realise they had very strong accents!

I don't know why anyone would think that about this drama. We Brits struggle through American movies with Southern fried and "Ghetto" accents that are utterly incomprehensible to our ears , so I don't know why anyone would be troubled by the accents here.

You just made my point.
I am a Canadian and live in the US. I watch a lot of British TV and movies.
I was just commenting on this particular show. The regional accents portrayed are very difficult to translate. I am looking for copies of some shows with subtitles, to help me enjoy the shows more.

I am Hungarian and I live in Hungary, but I had no problem with the british/irish or scottish accent, nither with the american ones.

The worst accents for me are the highly nasal, helium squeakers who suddenly appeared in the US about 15-20 years ago. It started with the young girls and now it's men too - no wonder so many Brits are being chosen for American roles now.

I'm Australian and had no problem with any of the accents. Even Nancy's father, with his heavy Scots accent.

Funny, I'm an Aussie too - been living in the UK for 6 years - I didn't notice the accents particularly either. We always record things and watch them later, so if something is hard to pick up, I can rewind and replay the scene. Had to do that a couple of times, but not really because of accents - more because actors these days tend to talk fast and swallow their words. I've had more trouble with other shows than this one.

It's not the accents that make it unwatchable...

The accents aren't that bad, no worse than an episode of "Corrie" or Eastenders, maybe it is different to the stereotypical posh accent Americans always give us.

reply

My hearing is extremely bad, and I use the captions, but I didn't really need them for this one, they were quite mild compared to some.
