History according to Asterix the Gaul

Rome = Evil,
Barbarian (sorry, I mean FREEDOM FIGHTER) = Good

What I find funny is that people see this as a "fresh" take on the Roman Empire. Right, because every other movie ever made depicted the Romans as peace loving hippies!

The only difference between Rome and the peoples it conquered was that Rome developed a better system that allowed for science and development giving it military and social advantages. If the Gauls had done so, then we would be vacationing in Lutetia to take pictures of the Colosseum! Slavery was practiced throughout the ancient world. It was not Rome's advantage.

When you take into consideration the duration of the Roman Empire you see that it was by and large peaceful. Why? Because peace makes for good business. Within the Roman sphere commerce took place with a minimum of theft and piracy.

Rome didn't fall to freedom fighters looking for justice. It fell to rough men that come in the night to loot rape pillage and burn! Yeah, not just Romans do that.

If you don't like Rome, then here are some of the things you should give back:
The system of government of the USA
Concrete
Thermal baths, central heating and floor heating
Aqueducts and viaducts
Half of the European legal system
Highways
Stadiums
The architecture of every other "wanna be" empire, including Washington
and my personal favorite - Wine!

The roman empire had it's good attributes but all in all it was a fascistic, brutal empire. That's fact, not opinion.

Well Doom-bringer, I guess that's that.

Thanks for that deep, insightful argument stating the facts.

Here's a few more:

1. Fascism - Originated in Italy, in 1922. So, you got the location right but you're only a few thousand years off in timing. If you mean the Roman political system, it evolved from city state to kingdom to a Republic. And yes in its later stages an emperor or a team of emperors (2 or 3 at a time). Hollywood aside, Rome developed a democratic system unparalleled in its time. With the exception of Greece, almost no where else in the world did the citizens of a government have rights and due process of law. By the way most non Roman men (sorry ladies) could become a naturalized citizen.

2. Slavery - Just google it please and show me which ancient culture did not use forced labor for criminals and former enemies. Again, yes slavery is horrible but imagine your fate at the hands of a barbarian chief if you traveled into his domain.

3. Brutality - If you mean Rome was brutal to its enemies and non-citizens, no more so than any other "Barbarian" tribe in existence at the time. If you want to judge ancient civilizations by modern, western, liberal norms, then you may as well call Rome a backwards culture that didn't even know how to use computers.

4. The empire at its zenith encompassed about a quarter of the world's population (~57 million). Rome's army spread throughout the empire was less than 450,000 at its peak (0.8%). Now those were trained soldiers, but still, armed only with swords, spears and rudimentary ballistic machines. Do you really think that they could control millions if they were as brutal as you suggest?

Rome succeeded because it was the LEAST brutal choice in a horrific world. It provided safe travel for merchants within its borders and the rule of law for its citizens.

just some facts...

If your triggered behind doesn't like the Barbarians so much - then you should stop using the Internet.

Just for fun. Republics existed since the Republic of Arwad and the judges. Carthage was also a Republic. Not to mention the democracies of Ancient Greece. The Roman Republic was a failure that fell to the Empire.
It's interesting that Concrete was used by Mycenaean Greeks and by others earlier in time.
Greeks created public baths and showers within gymnasiums
There are too many civilizations to list who used aqueducts (India, Greece), highways (Persia), stadiums (Greece), or similar architecture before the Romans
Don't be lazy by leaving all the work for other people
