How many oscars for this?

Starring DDL means a sure shot oscar for the film, but will PTA finally win his long overdue directing and screenplay oscars?

reply

I hope so, and since it's starting to film in 2017 and it comes out in 2017 they are probably thinking a late November or beginning of December for the the lease. Which is a perfect time.

reply

DDL doesn't guarantee Oscars for films. Gangs Of New York, The Ballad Of Jack And Rose and Nine (three of his last five projects) didn't win a single Oscar.

reply

That's true but PTA creates the kind of characters that are perfect for Lewis. Plus this is his first role in five years and I don't think he would come back to film for a mediocre role. I'm sure the script is really good and that's why he wants to do it.

reply

PTA's films pretty much always get several Oscar noms, and considering their last collaboration resulted in DDL's career-best performance, one can easily guess this film will be well-represented at the Oscars.

On a side-note, the Oscars do not matter. It's the work that stands the test of time, not the awards.

All the oscars!

I'd wage six noms:

- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Costume Design
- Best Director
- Best Cinematography
- Best Leading Actor
- Best Picture (As a filler rather than an actual contender)

But I'm gonna be a fool, and say Paul will probably win either best director or best original screenplay this time around because....Well, why not?

Getting nominated for lead actor, best director and best original screenplay, but then just as a filler in best picture?

I am Ubik. Before the universe was, I am. I made the suns. I made the worlds.

reply

I'm saying while this could be acknowledged for best picture, I don't think it'll be expected to win for whatever reason, a "filler picture" I say sometimes. Sorta like the Best Picture nom for Brooklyn or Best Adapted nom for Inherent Vice: It's there but we can all feel that it really isn't part of the "showdown" so to speak.

But none of this is absolute, of course.

Howard Hughes was Italian?

reply

yeah I guess I see what you mean, I don´t expect it to be a frontrunner, though it should be in the top 5 of the best pic noms if it has director screenplay and actor, so I wouldn´t call that filler

I am Ubik. Before the universe was, I am. I made the suns. I made the worlds.

reply

How could anyone possibly know that before seeing a frame of the film?

reply

Of course nobody knows. It's just fun speculation

Howard Hughes was Italian?

reply

As long as PTA doesn't follow his recent trend of writing about nothing.

He's a great screenwriter, arguably top 3 in Hollywood and the best among writer-directors, but there's no denying that his last few films have been lacking in the depth department.

That can be easily remedied by ditching these "character studies" and doing a film with an actual resolution for once.

If this film is another "character study", I can almost guarantee it will not do well at the Oscars.

Get your ass back to the VG board, fool 

But in the mean time, I disagree. I feel that PTA's last two films have exceed pretty much everything he had done before that, excluding Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. The Master and Inherent Vice are some of the most entrancing films of the 21st century imo, made even better because of how enigmatic they are

If I were to make a prediction though, I'd wage that this new movie will be like There Will Be Blood: A concentrated core (Oil/The fashion industry) and its rippling affect on both the community and DDL

i'd say 2.5 to 3.
