Who is the DP ?

Anyone?

reply

The rumor is PTA will film it himself.

reply

There are rumours going about that PTA is doing it himself, but no one seems to have a good source on it so who knows.

reply

Really ?

Like Steven Soderbergh ?

I mean digital is now easy to handle, but PTA always shoots on film, doesn't he?

35mm is not quite as easy to handle without training.

But if the assistants do the dirty stuff and he only choses the frame & lighting, it might work.

reply

Yeah, there is no way he is shooting digital.

I guess he might´ve picked up some skills over the years?

I am Ubik. Before the universe was, I am. I made the suns. I made the worlds.

reply

Don't forget though PTA has been doing this for over twenty years now. He's undoubtedly learnt a lot off Elswit.

Rumours are on The Master he ended up taking over and doing a lot himself. He also has a talented lighting cameraman and experienced gaffer to work with.

reply

From the photos it looks like he's got Colin Anderson as camera operator and Erik Brown as assistant camera.

reply

Hmm. On the official logline on who's cast and crew, it says that Michael Bauman is 'lighting cameraman'.

"The creative team includes Academy Award-winning costume designer Mark Bridges, marking his eighth consecutive project with Mr. Anderson; Emmy Award-winning production designer Mark Tildesley and BAFTA Award-nominated set decorator Véronique Melery; Academy Award-nominated film editor Dylan Tichenor, and BAFTA Award-nominated composer Jonny Greenwood, each marking their fourth feature with Mr. Anderson; casting director Cassandra Kulukundis, on her seventh film with Mr. Anderson; and lighting cameraman Michael Bauman".

He has since been gaffer on 'The Master' and 'Inherent Vice' - might Anderson be bumping him to cinematographer?

I highly doubt Anderson is doing it himself, but I guess you never know.

reply

I would be reluctant to ascribe the way PTA's films have looked to the film's credited DP. Since PTA is responsible for dictating the way his films look, their composition, their subtle movements, the whole notion of a DP feels something of a misnomer. A lot of the time they merely do the bidding of the filmmaker, particularly one as fastidious as PTA. My favourite film of his is The Master and rumours abound that he did most of the work on that, not necessarily operating the camera all the time but directing the camerawork.

Where did you read those "rumors" ?

On your toilet paper? 

I have seen some of cinematographer Mihai Malaimare Jr.'s

other features and they look similar to "The Master"

in terms of composition, framing, choice of colors, lighting…

He has a pretty distinct style & I like it a lot.

Check out f.e. "A walk among the tombstones", where he creates

a nightmarish atmosphere.

Some shots look just like "The Master",

only the aspect ratio is different & they shot digital.

Even some bad movies he did (like "The Time Being") look great !

He's a top D.P.

He deserved an Oscar nom for "The Master".

Might win one fine day.
