No discussion as to its origin and zero character build of any of the characters is what killed this film. And both things would’ve been very easy to address in some form. That’s the sad part.

reply

You got it. I just watched and all we know is that IT came from beneath the trench... Is it Cthulhu? Fuck. Maybe. The film makers obviously didn't care.

Movies can’t make up their minds anymore. Some are 90 minutes or 2.5 to 3 damn hours. This movie would’ve been PERFECT at 1:45 or 1:50 instead of 1:30. Hell at least show me a close up of a classified document as to the origin of the monsters, that would’ve taken 5 seconds. The other 15 mins you could’ve given me a backstory on Stewart and at least Cassel’s characters and more backstory on these drills and why they keep operating in an area that articles show is a suspected alien/monster site.

I still don't think I would have liked it much. The suits don't make sense with any technology this side of Star Trek and neither do the structures. Why did they have to set it that deep? Only because it sounds cool to have it at the deepest part of the ocean.
But, you are right about the characters. Starting the story with no background was an attempt to startle the audience and just sorta push the story off the highest point of a roller coaster. Interesting idea but it meant we didn't know anybody and had no sense of the place it was happening.

The Director confirmed it is indeed Cthulhu.

reply

Man... That's almost worse. The legacy of old H.P.L. and the cosmic horror is getting grimy and stupid and over familiar in the hands of everyone who wants to stick it into their mindless crap film.

reply

True. I'm still waiting for a REAL Cthulhu movie where he's not just some giant monster but a God like Lovecraft intended.

reply

We would need someone like Robert Eggers to give Cthulhu movie justice.
Like getting every.single.detail right.

If you've seen The VVitch or The Lighthouse you'll know what I'm talking about.

reply

I understand what you mean his style would be perfect for Cthulhu and those are Both very good movies indeed.

reply

Lame... IT looked nothing like Cthulhu from the lore.

reply

How could you tell? The movie was so dark it was impossible to see much of anything during all the underwater scenes

reply

Mariana Trench. Duh.

"Did the drill wake it up ?"

I think this part is pretty obvious.

reply

It was always there. Human greed drives the deep sea company's presence there.
