Overrated

maybe a 7/10 tops.

That is exactly what I just gave it on imDb. Not a bad show, but rather oversold (i.e. touted as more impressive than it is). I almost could have given it an 8 if it wasn't for certain problems I saw with characterization in particular, but well, those problems are there.

reply

agreed

reply

I like the look of the show more than the story.

reply

I really liked it when I first watched it but waiting F-O-R-E-V-E-R for the second season pretty much killed my interest.

reply

Your loss.

reply

It is?! So should I get re-interested? If you think it's worth it, I'll give it a go!

reply

You'd have to rewatch the entire series from the beginning, but yes, it's very much worth it.

It's the most thought-provoking series I've ever seen.

reply

Ah, I suspected I would need to rewatch the first season.

Argh! Why didn't I do that when I first read that the second season would be coming out?! Then I would have been all primed and ready to go.

reply

The same thing happened to me. I absolutely loved season 1 but it took so long for season 2 to be aired that by the time it was, I had forgotten almost everything about season 1 and couldn't get into 2. The thought of having to rewatch season 1 when there are so many other good shows on now that I'm involved with was not appealing to me.

reply

Me too, I loved season 1. Started to watch season 2, watched like half of the first episode and realized I don’t remember much and can’t follow the plot anymore, that I will need to rewatch season 1 in order to continue. But I just can’t get myself to rewatch it, there is always something else I’m more in the mood for.

reply

I have a feeling this same exact thing happened to a lot of folks.

reply

not necessary to rewatch. just watch the season 1 recap on youtube... there's also tons of wikis that will remind you of all the details.

reply

This is helpful, thanks. I might just do what you suggested. I still haven’t watched the second season.

reply

Rewatching is not optional with this series - there are too many characters and too many important details to remember.

If you can't bring yourself to rewatch from the beginning, there is no way you'll be able to appreciate the continuation. Simply not possible with this particular show.

To repeat what I said in some other thread, this is the most thought-provoking series I've ever seen, and as such requires a significant investment from the viewer.

For me, one of the problems is that although it was really interesting and complicated, it was a little morose and depressing. It felt worth it to get through season 1 (and, I think I also watched Season 2) because of the suspense, but having to go re-watch all of those depressing episodes in order to figure out the riddles just isn't appealing.

reply

Season 1 was really, really good, with a novel setting and approach to time travel and its paradoxes.

Season 2 was less appealing in some way, I feel like the concept wore thin over 8 episodes and by the 6th episode or so they were relying on interpersonal drama to drive the narrative.

Based on the last episode of S2, it looks as if there's something new coming which might refresh it, although I'm worried they'll be able to answer many of the questions in a satisfying way.

I haven't heard anything about this TV series at all from anyone I know who are subscribed to Netflix and it's only in the last several months now having signed up to Netflix myself to watch The Crown (2016-) and seeing the second season's release of Dark (2017-) promoted that I started watching it. And I am totally loving it!😍 Whereas the overhyped Stranger Things (2016-) has been described to me as a "masterpiece"—Seriously!🙄—I am finding Dark (2017-) far more original in comparison and, in my opinion, truly more deserving of the designation as a "masterpiece!" I find it ingenious how the creators and writers have weaved a marvelous tapestry of how the four families in Winden are all connected and the choices each person has made has far-reaching consequences for the past and future!🤯 I can't wait for the third and final season!🤓

reply

Only pre 16 year olds would consider Stranger Things a masterpiece. Its decent entertainment, but highly directive and forgettable.

reply

Agreed. Overrated. I don't think it deserves even 7. I gave it 4/10. Simply because I didn't like it. Shallow characters, boring and nothing much happening. They just jump from present to past or future and that's it. This TV show is extremely overrated.

reply

You do know that ratings are what people rate things, right? That's like saying peoples opinions or emotions are wrong.

reply

If anything, pretty much the last thing these characters are is shallow, but whatevs.

reply

I hate to be that guy who says "stick to The Transfomers" but if you gave this masterpiece labyrinth of thought provoking, complex, existential, paradoxical wonder a 4, I'd say that applies to you.

reply

I wouldn't call this garbage TV show "masterpiece".

reply

I'm sure I wouldn't call garbage you like masterpieces, either.

reply

I disagree. I thought it was absolutely fantastic. Some think the pacing is slow but to me it's a good one to "linger longer" over, not to mention process things that happen. It's definitely convoluted. Lots of crazy twists and developments. I'm very much looking forward to season 3.

reply

If anything I think this show is woefully underrated. I wish everyone knew about it (and that no one had an aversion to watching foreign language stuff with subtitles) - that would have made for a much more fulfilling discussion. This material can be studied in college philosophy courses.

The only thing is, it would have been more expedient to just watch the entire show at once. I've already had to rewatch season 1 when season 2 came out, and I know that now I'll have to rewatch both seasons 1and 2 in time for the release of season 3, which is no easy task.

I just hope my sacrifice will be worth it. 😊
