Why destroy all the wine?

They could have sold it to people and donated it to a charity because obviously it was very good wine albiet counterfeit but people could have enjoyed it. What a waste. Yes it was "counterfeit" but clearly it was fine wine that took a great effort to produce. To smash it etc seems so wasteful.

Law enforcement usually destroys counterfeit goods to prevent it from being sold again under fraudulent terms.

Same reason they don't sell counterfeit clothes or donate it to the needy.

Yep this was my reaction to that:

I suppose they could have compromised and just poured all the wine in a vat to sell separately and destroyed the bottles since that was really the part that was counterfeit.

It's made in a private home. Some of it could be poisonous to drink. And if it's fake it's worth like $1 anyway. It would be hard to sell even in a discount store.
