Is that what “uncut” is referring to?

Just in case you're not trolling, it's referring to the black opal that the entire film is based around. When they come out of the Earth, in their natural state, they are uncut. When they are processed for jewelry etc, they are cut.

Near the end of the movie, the zooming-in shot of Howard's bullet hole is identical to the zooming-in shot of the gem at the beginning. If this implies Howard is the gem, then "uncut" presages that he will not end up shining, that is, become super-rich and happy.
