allowed game footage in a movie about gambling.

I mean it’s nuttin we don’t know bout their fave pastime

They didn't Grant permission. The directors said they would claim fair use if the NBA made an issue out of it.

Was that a real basketball player?

I think this is a good question. I would be curious to know if this is covered by fair use; seems to be close to the line.

I thought it was really interesting how they intertwined the actual game footage and results with the movie. I wonder what other movies are like that
