Tim Chalamet should win...
...but won't. He was the best of all the performances. I loved Daniel Day Lewis in Phantom Thread, but Chalamet was even better than Lewis.

I haven't seen this... But Daniel Day Lewis was great in Phantom Thread... It's incredible to think that he was the same guy who played Plainview in There Will Be Blood... It's the only one of the nominees that I have seen...
Gray Oldman should be interesting as Churchill... He's usually quite transformative in his roles... And then there's Denzel to look forward to...
This Chalamet kid must be pretty amazing to be considered a contender among these guys, or is it just that people are fallimg in love with the character?

You feel what his character is feeling throughout the movie. The kid is so good that it is almost as if you are remembering things that actually happened in your life. This kid was able to channel something that most actors can't. He was amazing.
shareYeah, Gary Oldman has a mortal lock on it this year.
shareI know he does, but it doesn't mean that Chalamet isn't the one who really deserves it.
shareOn the other hand, Gary Oldman has deserved it more than once in previous years. There's a system operating here.
shareSo true, but the awards are so ridiculous when they just give it to someone because they should have won in the past. It should be for the best performance this year, not for all the years in the past.
shareI don't really care either way -- the whole concept of comparing actors in different roles is slightly ridiculous anyhow -- but I suppose someone who feels otherwise might say that if you don't do that you get actors like Peter O'Toole who do good work for decades and never win.
shareAll true.
shareI'll have to be honest: I don't know Oldman's body of work that well. I keep reading how he has deserved it and been robbed many times, but nobody has specified for what roles. I would be interested to know which of his roles people think merited an Oscar win.
shareCheck out his IMDB page.
See the films it mentions as being among his best.
Check the Nominations link to see when he has been nominated in the past.
Thank you, I know how to use IMDB, but it doesn't have a "he was robbed" category. Oldman was nominated only once before for Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy. Many people expressed the view that he has deserved an Oscar many times before and I asked people to tell me for which films they feel he should have been nominated or won, in other words their opinion. So, thanks for your input, but it was beside the point. Jes' Sayin'

I agree that Oldman is almost certain to win, and, not having seen the other nominated performances, I won't comment on who deserves it most. I just want to say that I was absolutely blown away by Chalamet's performance. I have seen him in other roles (Lady Bird and as the VP's son in Homeland), but I had no idea he was this good.
The final shot (I call it a shot even though it seemed to go on for five minutes) when the closing credits were rolling was amazing. Acting essentially with his eyes, he conveyed so much. The only comparable scene I could think of was the opening credits of Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte (a full twelve minutes into the film) with Bette Davis just crying, expressing her anguish over how her life went terribly wrong and she became a freak show for little kids.
