Did the father come up with an impartial solution? How would you have made the choice?

He didn't want to decide but I just feel like the blindfold and spinning round and round and firing randomly is still reckless, even though he felt less guilty.

More reckless than letting the three of them die?

It was cowardly. If he wanted it to be impartial, he could just roll a dice block, and then fire. But by doing this, he not only leaves the decision up to chance, but his action as well.
