Thoughts on an explanation? (Spoiler Alert)

Did he poison the gifts? I wasn't thinking interpretation,allegorical, mystical or metaphor,etc. during the film but was half-waiting for something that could explain what he seemed to cause--- at least by some stretch of the imagination. Tired of films that boil down to a flurry of semi-related images(so many films piece together so well) Oh,well.
