Breaks the fundamental contract between audience and director

I know that a director can just fill a screen with images that may or may not mean anything - they are free to do that - but when they start breaking the fundamental deal, I'm free to bail out. Could only put up with 55 minutes of this self-indulgent time waster. Maybe on a different day I'd have some patience for it. But it was in no hurry to let me know if we were seeing something real, a metaphor for the main character's state of mind, a hallucination, a music video, etc. The character didn't react like a human in a real situation and nothing made sense. Cool. Lots of interesting imagery, for what that's worth.
