I bailed out 20 minutes in

not to be taken seriously. I tried.

i really liked it.
i know some people have been very negative towards it. mark kermode gave it a proper thrashing, & it doesn't have the nicest metacritic rating.
all i can say is i found it endlessly entertaining and pleasantly confusing. i watched it yesterday afternoon, & i might watch it again today, because i want to spend more time lazing it that spacey, stonerish world.

reply

Same here.

And the ending was great. It was unexpected but logical, and it closed the story perfectly. It's not a masterpiece, but it's definitely a good movie, and good movies have become quite uncommon lately.

reply

damn that's disappointing!

reply

Too bad. I guess they should put a warning on the poster "Not for chickenshit pussies who will bail and then post on social media about not being able to finish the movie amid some vague shite about not taking it seriously."

reply

it's rated 6.4 for a reason.

reply

Yeah. People are divided over whether it's average or really good.

Is this the show with the gay genie that says "Yapple Dapple" all the time?

reply

I don't think so

You should give it another go. I also absolutely hated the beginning of the movie. I thought it was hollow tryhard garbage. I thought about turning it off at a few points. But it actually becomes fairly engrossing and clever as it develops, just takes a while. I ended up enjoying it a lot.

You're right about one thing though. The movie really isn't meant to be taken seriously. It's a send up of the conspiratorial, the occult, and the esoteric. After a certain point I could see exactly what they were doing with it and knew whoever wrote it had lots of knowledge and interest in the subject matter. It was pretty obviously made for the amusement of others who are versed in these things. For those who aren't I can imagine it would seem completely offputting and nonsensical.

But I would recommend watching through it anyway. The songwriter scene alone is worth it.

The TNA doesn't hurt either.

reply

Interesting. The positive reviews I've heard are from people with a knowledge of the occult. I'd like to understand that stuff but every time I try to broach it, I feel like people start trying to convert me to some sort of new religion. Would be nice to investigate it from a more detached perspective.

reply

Yeah, it's not a movie for everyone. Squares will hate it.

Satire that many missed apparently. See my post https://moviechat.org/tt5691670/Under-the-Silver-Lake/5cee3c9161d5f7111fe42a00/Satire

he has a book on the history of spider-man coming out later this year that i will almost certainly buy.
