S2E5 - All the World is Birthday Cake

Holy shit what a retarded episode. There's a million things that can be picked apart in this episode about why it's so incredibly stupid but getting Kelly and Bortus released after a month of failed negotiations is laughably bad.

Here's how negotiations to release the two prisoners should have gone.

"Yeah so, we're totally more advanced than your civilization, we can travel all around the galaxy at the speed of light and we can also wipe out your planet before lunch time. Here's a quick display of force". The Orville proceeds to scare the ever living shit out of the people in charge by showing just how advanced their military technology is. Negotiations complete. Prisoners released.

Also lol @ that planet letting Kelly and Bortus free after they've murdered a handful of prison guards.

2nd worst terrible episode. The worst being that awful gay porn addiction Bortus centric episode. That was harrrrrrrrable.

That was the first major misfire of this series, IMO. The porn addiction story line should've gone to Malloy. He's the type of goofball who might do something like this. Bortus is so uptight and by the book that he is the last person to have had an addiction and put the ship in danger, so it was completely out of character. It would've also been funnier with Malloy; with Bortus, it was just too bizarre to find funny. I was just sitting there going the entire time, "Am I supposed to be laughing at this? I'm not really sure what mood they're going for here. It's just too weird."

This is a great episode, as it shows just how stupid some primitive societies can be in their stubbornness. I mean, I don't think Star Trek ever did a similar episode based on astrology and star signs, and if, in their ancient history, a society like this saw one of their stars disappear in any of their constellations, it's most likely they consider it a strong omen for that star sign and would do something like this. It pushes it a bit when aliens making contact also happen to celebrate their birthday right in the middle of the stigmatised part of the year and the authorities panic and imprison them, but stranger things have happened in human history.

However, having Kelly and Bortus shoot at the prison guards is pushing it a bit. I assume they were shooting to injure, not to kill.
