Cultural references would have worked better this way

If Seth wanted to continually reference everything in American culture from 1940 on, especially the 1980's (his youth), wouldn't it have been a cooler idea to have the show actually take place in the present, but be about some secret space fleet that has all the aliens it has, as well as humans from Earth? I think that would be much more exciting and add conflict and intrigue you never had in Star Trek. Sort of "Men in Black in Space." Just a thought.

His show is a homage to Star Trek.

I get that.

I dont think "continually reference everything in American culture from 1940 on" is as high on the agenda as "homage to Star Trek"

if all he wanted was references he'd end up with that Billy Joel song...

But we don't have any space travel to speak of, so right there you have a major problem: Believability.

Yeah it would have to be in a splintered timeline, much like say how Max Headroom set itself 20 minutes into the future and the Swedish TV Show Real Humans (UK remade as Humans) did similar, so the world looks like ours with just one thing changing.

It's a bit like how say no-one had any idea that the world would change so vastly just from the introduction of the smart phone, or even more so 20 minutes before the first plane hit the WTC, no-one imagined we'd be now in an almost 2 decade war. So a splinter point from those two things could happen, where science went a different direction and space travel happened instead, like say no 911, then no dollars on a War and it was routed elsewhere to establish say USA superiority over say Russia much like the race to get to space and then the Moon in the 60's.

Could even take that back further as there was once a plan by the US to Nuke the Moon (Project A119) because a rumour started that the Russians were going to: https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=5kUqAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Bk4EAAAAIBAJ&pg=5584,131807
